Street art in Denver is a hot topic recently. Here at 303 Magazine, our Lifestyle and Culture desk spends a lot of time scoping out artists — emerging and established — in order to bring attention to the exploding art scene. We do our best to represent all kinds of artists, but on Wednesday, September 4 we are focusing on women in the street art scene with a day dedicated to them at Ratio Beerworks. The event is part of CRUSH WALLS — the annual RiNo street art and graffiti festival — and is organized by one of our own writers, Cori Anderson with The Street Art Network. All-day, street art lovers can head to Ratio Beerworks to soak in some street art designed and painted by women, connect with other like-minded fans and listen to five talented women during an artist panel discussion. READ: 14 Women Street Artists You Should Know in ColoradoStart the day off by watching Ingrid Jones paint a mural on the patio, sponsored by the unconventional art incubator Understudy. Then, before the panel begins from 5 to 6 p.m., grab a brew from Ratio and start networking with others for an “Empowerment Hour,” where you’ll be surrounded by decorations provided by Ladies Fancywork Society. Click to view slideshow.During the artist panel from 6 to 7:30 p.m., you’ll hear from a wide array of women involved in the Denver street art community. Mary Valdez, a public administrator with Denver Arts & Venues, has commissioned over 300 murals as part of the Urban Arts Fund and Denver Public Art program and works tirelessly to represent marginalized groups through art. Robyn Frances is a practicing muralist and studio artist who helps mentor aspiring female street artists through her organization Grow Love International. Chelsea Lewinski recently opened the Mural Lounge & Graffiti Bar on Broadway — a place for street artists to gather and create — and paints murals of her own. Lindee Zimmer moved to Denver a few years ago after invigorating the Fort Collins street art scene with the founding of the Fort Collins Mural Project, and now paints frequently in the Mile High City including two walls at CRUSH this year. Finally, UC Sepia will offer a perspective more founded in graffiti than street art, as well as five years of CRUSH experience, spray paint techniques and working within a male-dominated industry. Stay after the panel to ask your own questions, imbibe in more Ratio beer and place a bid on the freshly painted mural (all proceeds of the mural sale go to the artist). -- This event is free, but please RSVP here. Women + Street Art is on Wednesday, September 4 at Ratio Beerworks, 2920 Larimer Street. Live painting will happen from 12 to 6 p.m., the artist panel will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by 303 Magazine, Two Parts and Understudy.

The texture was lightweight, thin but not clingy but there was a smidgen of product that sank into my deeper lip lines, though it wasn’t noticeable at a normal viewing distance. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. The lipstick was firmer, stiffer in the tube, so it tugged a bit when applied initially but wasn’t uncomfortable to apply (I’d just recommend shorter strokes rather than a fluid stroke). It stayed on well for six hours, left a faint stain behind, and felt neither drying nor moisturizing while worn. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$26.00/0.12 oz. - $216.67 Per Ounce NARS has reformulated their core lipstick range, which now includes 72 shades across three finishes: matte, sheer, and satin. The formula is supposed to go on "smoothly and evenly with a light feel" that is "long-lasting" and "resistant to bleeding and feathering." The sheer finish has "subtle, sheer color that shines," while the satin finish has "creamy rich color" and the matte finish has "intense color with a velvety finish." The matte finish has a very thin, featherweight feel to it, but they didn't feel clingy or too prone to dragging during application, though they were definitely a firmer texture in the tube. There was enough glide from the inclusion of dimethicone (first ingredient for the matte finish) that went on evenly, felt velvety but didn't feel as powder-like as some of the other more silicone-heavy matte lipstick formulas that have been released in the last couple of years. Most shades were pigmented and nearly opaque to opaque. The wear ranged from three to six hours with deeper, richer shades staying on a bit longer and leaving slight stains. They were comfortable to wear but felt more non-drying than particularly hydrating. The satin finish has more slip, feels thicker (though not actually thick or heavy) compared to the matte finish, and of course, there was subtle to light shine/sheen. They applied smoothly, comfortably, and for the most part, went on evenly and didn't sink noticeably into my lip lines but there was some variance between shades. They were typically semi-opaque to opaque in coverage with four to six-hour wear that was lightly hydrating. The sheer finish had coverage that ranged from semi-sheer to true medium coverage but most had some translucency to them, which gave them a sheerer finish. I found most of the shades I tried were buildable to some degree. The texture was a bit firmer, but they felt more emollient and "melted" a bit more against my lips than I recall the original line of lipsticks doing. Some shades applied well with even application and were flattering on, but there were a few that sank more noticeably into my lip lines. This finish tended to wear between three and five hours. I don't have many of NARS' original lipsticks in my stash (I have mostly Audacious as they haven't been releasing many in the core range) to compare to. The matte finish was definitely thinner, more matte, and had a velvetier look on lips compared to the original which had a subtle sheen to it. The satin finish seemed a bit more pigmented and not quite as luminous/glossy as the previous formula, while the sheer finish was creamier, more emollient, and was easier to apply. It didn't feel like a vastly different formula, but it felt a bit easier to work with (smoother, more emollient but still lighterweight and thin, far less slip than any of the Audacious range) and was more comfortable to wear across the board for me. I didn't notice any scent or taste, though there is "fragrance (parfum)" listed in the ingredients--it smelled neutral, not waxy but I just didn't get any scent. It had nearly opaque color payoff in a single layer, which adhered evenly and didn’t emphasize my lip lines, though the actual product tugged slightly during application (though not painfully). When you meet another person who loves the same songs as you, there’s an instant connection. Whether you both love singing those top 40 jams into the shampoo bottle in the shower or you find commonality in the fact that you can’t help but feel a little less lonely when you hear Morrissey’s lilting voice on a rainy day, one thing is very clear — music can serve as a bridge from one person to another. In fact, that’s why so many of us love going to live shows and festivals. Not only is it easy to find your tribe when you’re making your way up to the barricade, but you’re also sure to find new bands that resonate with you. When it comes to building community and expanding your musical horizon, there’s no festival that provides a better space for that than Golden Haze Fest. With the rise in popularity of music festivals, it should come as no surprise that there would be an increasing number of festivals dedicated to shining the spotlight on more underground genres, metal music being no exception. Golden Haze Fest, set to host its first year of music this weekend, promises to combine all the best things about metal music with everything there is to love about the festival experience. From distorted bass lines and fast tempos to bouncing from stage to stage to see new bands, Golden Haze Fest will deliver a unique experience for all involved. Though the inaugural year of the metal fest has yet to commence, it’s already generated quite a bit of excitement among fans. Boasting an exciting line-up of (mostly) local bands, it aims to be the first and best festival of its kind. Though the focus of the festival will be doom and stoner metal, the bands on the bill offer a mix that is sure to please metal fans of every sub-genre — and if you’re excited about just one band on the bill, then you’re likely to love them all. Every band on the bill was carefully selected by Joshua Mulroney — the founder of Golden Haze Fest, who has spent the last decade booking all of the best metal and alternative shows in the Denver area. After dedicating so much time to the local underground scene, no one has a better handle on which bands have a real chance at making it big than Mulroney. “Everyone is right at that moment of them taking the head spotlight,” said Mulroney in an interview with 303 Magazine. “So that’s kinda how I picked them.” However, that’s not to say that he didn’t consider factors other than potential star power. “I kinda looked at it as, instead of a bunch of circles on top of each other — there was kind of enough that was similar that if somebody liked [one band] then they’re going to like [the others] even if they don’t know what band it is,” said Mulroney. “Because there’s enough of a sound that’s inter lapping within them, but they’re not exactly the same band. So you’re not going to sit there and hear the same tempo, you’re not going to hear the same riffs for six hours. It’s going to be different for every band, but there’s going to be enough overlay that you’re going to appreciate it if you like one.” Equally important to selecting the best bands for the bill, Mulroney focused on curating an experience that will help fans to build their music community. More than just selecting bands that he knew fans would love, Mulroney wanted to create an environment that embodies all the best parts of the metal community. “It’s all about the love really,” said Mulroney. “Where, I don’t think any other time in history you could say ‘I’m having a metal show and it’s about the love of people and the music — and this is a metal show that’s about the love of people and the music, that’s for sure.” The inaugural Golden Haze Fest has the potential to be a lot of things — but there’s not doubt that it will be an event you don’t want to miss. “I know just by the music and the line up that this is going to be so much fun,” said Mulroney. “This is going to peel back eyelids. This is going to generate a lot of excitement to whoever is there to witness it. Being outside of your genre — you’re going to be part of that family. Golden Haze Fest is right around the corner, but it’s not too late to get your tickets. Two day passes are currently available at two-for-one prices — so grab a friend and find a ride to Golden. Golden Haze Fest will take place on August 30 and 31 at the Buffalo Rose in Golden, CO. Tickets — including those included in the buy-one-get-one deal — are available here. via https://303magazine.com/2019/08/golden-haze-fest/ ![]() Golden HourColour Pop Golden Hour Super Shock Shadow ($5.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a light gold with moderate, warm undertones and a glittering finish. It had sheer coverage, which was buildable to medium coverage with two to three layers. The consistency felt lightly wet to the touch, but it felt more powder-like once it came into contact with my lid/fingertip. It worked best patted onto a larger surface area for a more one-and-done effect as it was sheerer or applied on top of another, more opaque product to add a glittering finish. The product applied fairly evenly and didn’t have issues with fallout during application nor during wear. It lasted nicely for 10 hours on me without fading or creasing. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$5.00/0.07 oz. - $71.43 Per Ounce ColourPop Super Shock Shadow is a cream-based formula that comes in a multitude of shades and finishes. The more metallic shades have the most slip to them (they have a “wetter” feel), while the more matte ones have a firmer, more clay-like consistency. Almost every shade I’ve tried from ColourPop has been exceptionally long-wearing (10+ hours of wear, usually there until I remove, even 14 hours later). The pigmentation can vary from shade to shade, but the average shade is quite pigmented. From feedback I’ve seen from readers, many love them but some don’t like them at all. They aren’t a traditional cream eyeshadow, as they are denser (more sponge-like), and they apply best with flat, firm, synthetic brushes (I like the MAC 242 and 249) for me. The brand recommends using fingers for the most pigmented application, but I’ve only felt that fingers were necessary on a few shades (usually the super glittery ones). The more matte shades can be on the drier side and vary from medium to opaque in coverage, though they're often buildable. They can be a little hard to diffuse the edges of, though some are lovely to work with. The more glittery shades have been the weakest to me, as they can be sheerer or harder to apply. Sometimes, they are more pigmented and work like the other finishes in the formula, but often, they are sheerer and only function well patted on top of more pigmented eyeshadows to add glitter. They do, however, tend to have little fallout over time with the occasional shade having a more moderate amount of fallout (but still less fallout than most powder eyeshadows with glitter). For anyone still yet to be acquainted with Golden Moon Distillery — the craft spirits company started by Gould and Karen Knight in 2008 — the recently expanded production facility and nearby speakeasy have been busy making award-winning hooch and impressive cocktails to well-justified praise and growing popularity. This year the location underwent a massive augmentation that included the addition of $2 million worth of new and vintage equipment and a 32-foot silo, which houses 1,600 bushels of grain sourced from the nearby Golden Malting. Click to view slideshow. The distillery — which offers tours four days a week -- is full of a range of antique and highly customized new stills. Gould, who claims to have caught the collector’s itch, is incredibly detail-oriented. His knowledge of equipment, both antiquated and current, is encyclopedic. A 1930s Deroy Fils from Paris is still in operation. “The best way to describe it is they’re less efficient,” said the distiller, going on to explain that imperfection breeds character. The recently expanded facility has a variety of new mechanisms designed to replicate the old-style apparatus. Much of Golden Moon’s most popular products have been produced exclusively with the old-time equipment. Gould hopes that the new machines will be able to make the same quality of beverage on a large scale. Gould is particularly proud of a massive new still he designed with the help of the late David Pickerell. “I designed it, he unfucked it,” Gould said of the legendary whiskey maker’s contribution. Gould started distilling single-malt 28 years ago and has been close with some of the biggest players in craft-spirit production. Pickerell was known to stay at Gould’s house during his visits to Colorado. Much of Gould’s stock is produced entirely in-house. He also finishes whiskey — including gold medal-winner at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition Gunfighter 13 Tennessee Bourbon – Orphan Cask — using imported spirits that he ages in a range of rum, port, wine and unadulterated oak barrels. Initially done solely to flush out their own cocktail program, it was decided that the Gunfighter series would be pushed to market due to the overwhelming popularity of the spirit. Lucky for whiskey-enthusiasts everywhere the 100-proof expression is available in New York, Colorado, California and Georgia and with online sales to follow by the end of the year. Gould has received a plethora of accolades and is a member of some of the most prestigious groups in the beverage community. He is a board member of the Colorado Distiller’s Guild, a small distillery member of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States and a member of the American Craft Spirit Association. He is the first American ever to be named a Warden of London’s Gin Guild. Now Golden Moon’s products are available in 16 states, DC and four European countries — England, Denmark, Italy and Germany — with product entering the Taiwanese market soon. The distiller describes himself as over-educated, though his intellectual pursuits have clearly influenced the way he commits himself to the business. After getting degrees in International Supply Chain Management and Foreign Relations he went on to earn a General Certificate in Distilling specializing in cereals from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling in the UK. He is inspired by historical precedents and while the move to Golden was prompted by a desirable job offer for his wife, he’s since come to appreciate the location as a famed site for gold rush moonshine. Casper had Casper Moon, Leadville had Leadville Moon and Golden was known for its Golden Moon. Click to view slideshow. The best way to get acquainted with the spirits is at the nearby Golden Moon Speakeasy, located in the heart of downtown Golden. The varied menu highlights the hooch across a range of cocktails, many of which Gould gleaned from his collection of rare and vintage cocktail books. The cloud city ($12) is Earl Grey Violette, lemon, ginger shrub and grapefruit bitters. The naturally produced Violette causes the drink to lean more towards the light pink, which may come as a shock to people used to more neon-hued Aviations. The Bruce Wayne ($12) is gin, pineapple, honey, lemon, coconut milk, Blackstrap Bitters and activated charcoal. The tiki-style drink is incredibly refreshing and serves as a nice contrast to some of the list’s more spirit-forward refreshments. Gould’s deep knowledge and numerous awards are a solid indication of the man’s dedication, but the product speaks for itself. It is clear that the distiller has done his homework but at the end of the day, even he would insist that what counts is how enjoyable the liquor is to drink. Luckily the accolades don’t lie, everything on the line is built with commitment and a deep understanding of tradition. The cocktails don’t lie either. A decade in the making, this urban art extravaganza will celebrate the 10th year by showing just how far it’s come, while staying true to its roots this September 2 through 8. The first years of CRUSH (short for Creative Rituals Under Social Harmony) looked vastly different from what the festival is now. In 2010, a handful of graffiti artists, led by Robin Munro, were allowed to paint walls without fear of retribution. Three years later CRUSH doubled in size, and each year after it’s grown even more. But the idea behind it has remained consistent — to showcase artistic talent in an open-air and accessible format. Because CRUSH is a week-long festival, it’s hard to figure out the best way to take advantage of such a unique event. With years of expertise on our side, we’ve devised the perfect itinerary to follow in order to maximize your street art experience this upcoming week. For the full schedule of events, go here. Say Goodbye to the Old Murals![]() A buffed wall before CRUSH 2018 started. Photo by Cori Anderson When: Friday, August 30 – Sunday, September 1 The Lowdown: As the first day of CRUSH nears, some of the walls in RiNo will be buffed — or painted over in a solid color. Each year this happens, and each year it’s (mostly) a mystery as to which walls will become blank canvases for the upcoming festival until the week before. There’s something eerie about seeing the familiar murals disappear one-by-one, but that same feeling rolls into a mood of renewal and excitement. Taking the trip to explore the neighborhood with the thought that the landscape will change drastically in one week’s time will ensure that you appreciate every wall like it’s the first time you’ve seen it. Pro tip: If you want to help with this process or other aspects of the festival, you can always sign up to volunteer. It’s a great way to get behind-the-scenes a little and see what it takes to organize an event of this scale. Roll Call![]() Michael Ortiz (illson) at CRUSH 2018. Photo by Cori Anderson When: Tuesday, September 3 The Lowdown: After an opening night party on Monday, most artists will start working on their walls on Tuesday. It’s not the best time to see the pieces of art, but it is the best time to introduce yourself to an artist you might want to watch throughout the festival. Check out the map in order to find all the walls to head to. Tuesday also gives street art lovers a chance to support some of their favorite (mostly) local talent at a gallery exhibition hosted at Dateline, This Is It Vol. 2. With work from Alexandrea Pangburn (the new Creative Director for CRUSH) and Romelle, Anna Charney, Casey Kawaguchi, Chris Haven, DINKC, Elvis, Emit, Jason Garcia, Ladies Fancywork Society, Koko Bayer, Michael Ortiz, Miss Meeg, Pat Milbery, Patrick Kane McGregor, Ricks 73, Rumtum and Shitty Kitten — it covers an impressive expanse of what Denver street art has to offer. Pieces from visiting artists Remote, Birdcap, Didirock, El Chan Guri and Hiero round out the collection and remind us to look beyond Denver every once in a while. The focus on local artists is admirable, but it’s always exciting to have visiting artists in Denver, bringing a different perspective and aesthetic to our streets. Even though all the visiting artists this year were invited by a Colorado-based artist to encourage collaboration and keep it local, we can’t help but shout out to some of those artists as ones not to miss. Pro tip: If you fall in love with one of the artists’ styles during this show or during the festival, you can always commission an original. Many of the artists who participate in CRUSH are versatile practitioners who make custom art, and often they are just an Instagram message away. Learn Something New![]() UC Sepia working on of her murals from CRUSH 2017. Photo courtesy of the artist When: Wednesday, September 4, 5 – 8 p.m. The Lowdown: Two events on Wednesday will help you understand the street art scene in more detail. Unfortunately, they are occurring at the same time so you’ll have to decide which one to choose. Dive into the “Law of Street Art” at Ironton Distillery & Crafthouse, where attorney Zach Warkentin of Warkentin LLC and Dave Ratner of Creative Law Network will discuss copyright and other legal issues with street art. This panel will help clarify when and how you can use street art, murals and graffiti with photography or other situations while also educating artists about their rights when painting in the public sphere. Meanwhile, at Ratio Beerworks, Wednesday will be a day for celebrating women in street art. Organized by The Street Art Network and 303 Magazine, five women who are involved in the street art scene in various ways will discuss their experiences, thoughts, lessons learned and more from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The panelists are UC Sepia, Robyn Frances, Chelsea Lewinski, Lindee Zimmer and Mary Valdez. Get there early for an “Empowerment Hour” from 5 to 6 p.m. to connect with other street art lovers and maybe talk to a panelist ahead of the discussion. Pro tip: In case you can’t make it to the “Law of Street Art” event, there’s one lesson we can help with. Always ask if you can take a photo of an artist before doing it and especially if you plan to post it on social media. Some artists prefer a more secretive approach to their work, other artists will be more than happy to pose — it’s just a matter of being polite and asking permission. When posting photos of CRUSH’s artists and activities online, always credit the artist and the festival by tagging the appropriate accounts. If you plan to make any money from an image with street art, you must have the explicit consent of the artist. Secret Walls![]() Secret Walls at CRUSH 2018. Photo by Amanda Piela When: Friday, September 6, 7:30 – 11:30 p.m. The Lowdown: Last year marked the first time that CRUSH and Secret Walls collaborated, and this year it’s coming back due to popular demand. Secret Walls started 12 years ago and has traveled all over since, pitting street artists against each other in a friendly competition that requires collaboration and the ability to focus under pressure. Unlike the painting you’ll see during the day (relaxed and precise), Secret Walls lets you experience the frenzied energy of artists competing and improvising. The location is — you guessed it — secret until the day of the event. But expect a big warehouse somewhere in RiNo. Make sure you pay the $5 in advance. Pro tip: Bring a bandana to cover your nose and mouth, in case some artists use spray paint like they did last year. At times, it was difficult to stand close to the action without inducing a headache. A Day of Exploring![]() Mural by ESIC for CRUSH 2018. Photo by Amanda Piela When: Saturday, September 7 The Lowdown: Start your weekend in an adventurous way with a photo scavenger hunt from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., which starts in Lot 28 at 28th and Blake Streets. Then, spend the rest of your day checking out the different sites and activities — like the Boxyard Park concert. Or, take your own tour through the art. Start at the Denver Central Market parking lot and work your way north through the alleys (go here for the map). Walk over the pedestrian bridge at 36th and Blake Streets and continue following the path to see the new murals on the Brighton Boulevard side. End the tour by completing the loop and ending at the same parking lot (it will take you roughly two hours) or finish it at Zeppelin Station or The Source for a drink and a good view. Pro tip: Check out our previous articles about CRUSH to beef up on your local artist knowledge for the scavenger hunt. Block Party![]() Muralist Anna Charney collaborated with digital artist B1n4ry Visuals at CRUSH 2018. Photo by Brittany Werges When: Saturday, September 7, 12 – 8 p.m. The Lowdown: Last year’s block party was a hit, with special augmented mural activations, music, beer from Ratio Beerworks and an excited crowd made up of artists and art lovers. As pictured above, Anna Charney’s mural for CRUSH 2018 was designed to interact with digital projections from local artist B1n4ry Visuals. This year, we are expecting a similar experience, plus a little more. Full details are forthcoming, but for now, know that this Saturday night soiree will be the place to hang out. Pro tip: If you want to take some unusual street art photos, grab your tripod and bring it down to RiNo on Saturday night. There will be plenty of opportunities for one-of-a-kind shots. A Community Mural and Farewell Concert![]() Inside Mission Ballroom, with art by Anthony Garcia Sr. Photo by Amanda Piela When: Sunday, September 8 The Lowdown: End the weekend by getting your hands dirty during a community mural painting from 10 a.m. to noon, designed by Anthony Garcia Sr. and located at 39th and Wynkoop (in the middle of the intersection). After watching artists all week, you should have some hints as to how to paint a mural properly. Then, after checking out the finished murals, head to the Mission Ballroom for the first annual CRUSH concert with Natalia LaFourcade. LaFourcade is a Mexican pop-rock singer who has enjoyed immense success in Latin America since she debuted her first album in 2003. Pro tip: Check out all the art inside Mission Ballroom — it was commissioned from local artists, some of which are participating in this year’s CRUSH like Garcia Sr., Lindee Zimmer, Detour and RUMTUM. -- For more information, including a list of all participating artists in CRUSH 2019, visit this website. via https://303magazine.com/2019/08/crush-walls-schedule/ If I had to pick something, I’d say Tom Ford Platinum or Escapade. It’s not really my preferred way to work with eyeshadow; it’s such an ineffective use of time to test for me so it’s something I rarely do.

via https://www.temptalia.com/ulta-21-days-of-beauty-september-1st-2019-through-september-21st-2019/ ![]() Covent GardenOFRA Covent Garden Highlighter ($29.00 for 0.35 oz.) is a bright, light pink with strong, warm undertones and a high-shine, metallic finish. It had rich color coverage in a single layer, which applied evenly and smoothly on my skin but blended out effortlessly. The texture was smooth to the touch, lightly creamy, and wasn’t powdery but still picked up well with a brush. When I wore it for swatches, it seemed to emphasize skin texture ever-so-slightly at nearly full coverage, but when I wore it for testing longevity, I didn’t find it emphasized texture, so it was definitely right on the edge. The highlighter lasted well for eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$29.00/0.35 oz. - $82.86 Per Ounce The formula is supposed to have a "liquid to baked technology" that has "unparalleled pigment payoff" that can be used as a highlighter as well as an eyeshadow or as a blush topper." It's a very pigmented formula with a high-shine, metallic finish that will be most suitable for someone who wants an intense highlighter. The texture was denser but not dry or difficult to work with, so it seemed to melt onto the skin the more I buffed and blended the highlighter on.
