Fresh n PeachyColour Pop Fresh n Peachy Pressed Powder Blush ($7.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a brighter, medium coral with stronger, warmer orange undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer with a smooth, silky consistency that felt a little thin. I’m often worried when a blush is both thin and matte, as it can often lead to a product that adheres too strongly wherever it’s initially applied and then doesn’t blend out as well, but I’m happy to report that this shade applied evenly and diffused easily along the edges for a seamless lay down of product. The “downside” to this product (which is reflected in the rating) is that it was far more pigmented than marketed (“buildable”). It stayed on nicely for eight hours on me before fading visibly. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$7.00/0.21 oz. - $33.33 Per Ounce The formula is supposed to go on "smoothly" and have a "natural and healthy flush" that has "long wear" and "can be layered to your desired intensity." It is a lightly to moderately powdery powder blush with semi-sheer to semi-opaque, buildable color payoff. The consistency has a drier, thinner feel and though it feels silky to the touch, I found it the type of powder blush can be tricky to blend out evenly on the skin, depending on one's skin type or base preferences. The drier the skin/base, the better the formula would blend, but any natural oils or slip caused the blush to go on unevenly and was difficult to blend out. The wear was between seven and eight hours on me on average. Browse all of our Colour Pop Pressed Powder Blush swatches. Take that union and put it in a live, intimate setting like the Bluebird and you have a can’t miss concert to add to your calendar this Friday, August 30. Comprised of Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer, Generationals is touring in light of their sixth full-length LP, Reader as Detective, released last month. Opening the show is Denver/Los Angeles indie-rock act South of France. The reverb-vibrating project by Jeff Cormack formed in 2012 when Cormack met bandmember, Kelly Cormack. Together, they intertwine their male and female vocals into a harmonious sound reminiscent of Cults or Portugal. the Man. The band stormed up enough waves in Denver to even be awarded one of Refinery 29‘s top 10 reasons to visit Denver in 2013. Aside from their music, South of France has also released their own fashion design, expanding their creative endeavors.
Generationals fuse together worldly percussions, infectious sounds and catchy melodies. Their new album is no different, something the band is eagerly translating live now. In an interview with 303 Magazine, Joyner said, “It’s been especially exciting to get to play so many new songs live for the first time and the crew we’re rolling with this time around are all killers.” Referencing their new songs, he noted, “We play a handful of the new ones and, I won’t lie to you right now — they’re all crushers. The response has been great thus far.” The band’s pop sound is hard not to like. Taking timeless themes and merging them into their own modern sound, Generationals seem to garner more attention with every release. Now, they’ve solidified themselves as an original indie-dance act not to be overlooked. Reader as Detective — their newest album — was featured on NPR’s “New Music Friday” along with PASTE’s “Albums of the Week.”
Generationals started their tour in Dallas earlier this month and make their stop in Denver this Friday — consider it the perfect pregame for the start of your weekend. In our interview, Joyner also exuberated that he’s sure this tour has consisted of “the most fun shows” the band has ever put on, adding to the excitement. With South of France giving you a reason to show up early and Generationals making you want to stay until the end, get ready for a jam-packed evening of dreamy-dance music. Generationals perform this Friday, August 30 at Bluebird Theater, 3317 E. Colfax Ave., Denver. Tickets are available here.via https://303magazine.com/2019/08/generationals-denver-bluebird/
“How’s it going boss?” That’s how three of the five Paul’s Liquors customers addressed Perfecto Basurto, an employee of the Colfax booze stop for three decades, on a Monday afternoon. “Everybody who’s been around Cap Hill knows who that guy is,” said Darren Polak, a former Denver resident, and Tooey’s, Off Colfax bartender. Polak went to Paul’s for over a decade. In all that time, only once Basurto wasn’t in the store. It was like the world tilted on its axis. It didn’t feel right.
About 80 percent of the business is regulars, according to Basurto. They all know Basurto because he’s worked there since the 1990s and he’s always working. He mans the counter on the south end of the store like a captain of a ship. His wheel is an old-school cash register that beeps with a tap of each number. He knows what brands of smokes and bottles his customers want without them having to ask like any great bartender. It’s insight he’s gained by working around 104 hours per week. “I like it. I don’t like staying home,” he said. “I like to do something. I feel good knowing I’m doing something.” He has a family, though his four kids are grown now. In the past, he worked various morning shifts at a bakery, post office warehouse, and another liquor store, while working nights at Paul’s. Back in the ’90s, he said there were three employees working at Paul’s at a time because Colfax was dangerous. He even witnessed a shooting and was able to aid the cops by remembering the license plate number of the shooter’s Toyota. “The time I started, it was bad,” he explained. “Now, it’s nothing. It’s pretty quiet.”
Today, Basurto often works by himself. People sometimes try to steal, but Basurto is not afraid of confrontation. Polak witnessed him in action. “I walked up to the counter, Perfecto’s eyes were [looking] over me, watching some guy in the aisle,” Polak said. Basurto noticed the man stash a 750-milliliter bottle of cheap vodka. Basurto walked to the front door to lock it before the thief could make his exit. “Perfecto takes [the bottle] and taps it on the guy’s forehead,” Polak said. It was like he was shaming a potty training puppy. No. Bad. “One bottle is about 10 dollars, but it makes me mad because I feel like the guys think, ‘This is a stupid guy. I’m going to take whatever I want and they can’t do nothing,’” Basurto said. ’” But I do something.” Basurto doesn’t plan on retiring or taking a vacation any time soon. He doesn’t even drink to relax — maybe one Heineken every other week. Work is how he relaxes and he seems happy doing it. One regular walked in was a modest bouquet and a huge grin. “Somebody’s happy today,” Basurto said. “I got this for my lady,” the customer said as he walked to the cooler to grab some beer. “Let me get a pint, too.” Basurto reached for a plastic bottle behind the counter, knowing exactly what pint he wanted. It’s a fun fashion emporium that doesn’t take itself too seriously. A free-spirited, relaxed, spend-an-entire-Sunday-here kind of store located in Capitol Hill on East 13th Avenue. Not only does it house beautiful under-the-radar fashion brands, it’s also a lifestyle store with shelves full of plants, beauty products, books, candles and more carefully curated by its owner, Olivia Meininger. With a background in fashion design, Meininger has built a neighborhood curiosity shop where you can come in and discover niche brands you don’t see everywhere such as Paloma Wool, Rachel Comey and Batsheva. Her eye for what’s a la mode is what makes the store so successful and why she’s opening another store in Edgewater come this fall. Meininger — Denver’s favorite purveyor of uber-chic occasion dresses — tells us why she’s excited for fall and her plans for the new store, whilst modeling some of her favorite fall pieces available at Queen City General Store. 303 Magazine: How does it feel to be located next to the world’s first Quizno’s? Olivia Meininger: The proximity to greatness is inspiring. 303: What drew you to this neighborhood to open your very first store? Was it the Quizno’s? OM: I love this neighborhood. As a kid I’d always go to Watercourse and Buffalo Exchange. My buds all worked there. When I moved back to Denver I started bartending at City, O’ City and lived a few blocks away. I met my husband on this block. When the space became available, I had been looking for a while and it was just right. 303: Tell us how you came about to open Queen City General Store? How did it all begin? OM: My background is in fashion design. I always wanted to have a space where I could have creative freedom while also supporting emerging designers and makers and offering my community a place to come, possibly feel a bit better about the world, better about themselves when they go into the world to do their thing. I love all things art and design — human and nature-made — and just wanted to spend my life immersed in it all. 303: Did your background in fashion help? OM: Most definitely. 303: Tell us about the new store, what can we expect? Where will it be? When does it open? OM: Yes! It will be in the Edgewater Public Market, scheduled to open early October. We’re very excited. We just want to make something fun and beautiful. 303: What’s the vibe for the new store? OM: Fun. We mostly just love to have fun and work hard. We are very into experiential shopping and we love to create environments that blend art, fashion and lifestyle. Our current inspiration is Party City meets Donald Judd. 303: Any new designers we can expect to see? OM: Shaina Mote is new for us this season, we love her. And Corridor for all the men out there. 303: Fall is just around the corner, what are some of the fall trends you’re expecting to see in store? What are your favorite trends and what trends won’t you be rocking? OM: Saturated color, big sleeves, neon, oversized prints, super soft knits, a growing focus on sustainability which we are very into. I’m actually quite terrible at trends. I really believe in buying better but less and buying things you want to own forever. I’m usually rocking black jeans and old tees but I LOVE to occasion dress so I’m always looking for those special pieces that just turn you on. Mixing high and low items is big for us too. We are always mixing designer with vintage. 303: What are some of your favorite fall pieces that are coming to Queen City General? OM: Fall is so good this season! I’m obsessed with everything Rachel Comey and Batsheva. Rachel’s Amplus Dress in Neon Green is completely out of control amazing. We’ve got silk skirts and chunky knit sweaters on the way from Shaina Mote and I can’t wait for them. 303: What are you most excited about for fall? OM: Layering and Halloween. Halloween with kids is where it’s at. 303: Who shops at Queen City General Store? Who is the Queen City Girl or Boy? OM: Our brick and mortar is such a neighborhood place. We seriously have 5-year-old regulars and 80-year-old regulars and I love them all. 303: Was there ever a moment when you thought, this is not going to work? OM: Yes. Every other day but we really try to lead with positivity. We do this because we love to and that seems to translate to our customers. 303: What do you like about the fashion scene/community in Denver? OM: Denver is full of amazingly creative people. With very few places to shop in person that are completely outside of fast fashion, we really want to take risks with our buys and edits to deliver unique pieces from thoughtful companies. 303: Apart from the new store, what else is next for Queen City? What would be the dream? OM: An eponymous line has always been part of the plan and we’re getting close to a place where we’ll be able to really get into that which I’m super excited about. We have so much freedom, which was really a driving force for me in creating this business, so we can grow and do whatever we want. Shows, traveling to source, installations, whatever we can dream up. Seeing the dreams come to life, that’s the dream. Photography by Lauren Magin. via https://303magazine.com/2019/08/nativ-303-white-party/ Street Artist Known for Painting Favelas with Vibrant Murals in Brazil is Coming to Denver8/27/2019 – These murals are more than a pretty coat of paint, though. They are opportunities for locals to improve their houses and brighten their neighborhoods, as the artists use as much help as they can get in each project. Since the first one in 2005, Haas&Hahn have gained international recognition, which has led one of them — Koolhaas — to Denver. He will be in town next week to serve two purposes — to paint during the CRUSH WALLS graffiti and street art festival and to inspire empathy during the Biennial of the Americas Festival. The Biennial is a massive event held every other year in Denver, designed to bring together leaders in various topics from all over the Western hemisphere. This year, the theme of the Biennial is “empathy in action” — something that Koolhaas understands and practices daily. Although CRUSH WALLS focused more on Colorado-based artists this year than in the last few years, they readily partnered with the Biennial to host Koolhaas during this upcoming week (September 2 through 8). As an artist who constantly strives to build bridges between street art, social justice and urban planning, Koolhaas might be able to impart some wisdom to RiNo or other city groups who also spend their time juggling those heavy topics. -- For a map of where to find Koolhaas and other artists during CRUSH, go here. via https://303magazine.com/2019/08/jeroen-koolhaas-denver-crush/ I couldn’t leave you without some inspiration for fall lip colors — so many to choose from! While I’ll absolutely wear any color or finish during the year, autumn makes me think of richer colors, whether they are brighter (but saturated) or deeper, vampier.
