This is an entry in an ongoing series for 303 Magazine, which will provide a range of local album reviews. It is our intention to highlight the talents of local musicians, whether veterans to the industry or newcomers. Like the bands, the album can be fresh or something we just haven’t had the power to take off repeat in the past few months. Check out previous entries in the series here.Coal Town Reunion encompasses the dream of Denver music. Having gotten their start as a string band in 2014, the group eventually evolved to electric instruments, however, they never formally abandoned their Americana roots. They simply widened their circle of expertise to include more sound in their tunes. Consisting of Jeff Montoya on vocals and bass, Alana Dym on percussion, James Dumm on lead guitar, John Paul Maxfield on vocals and rhythm guitar and Sami Steidl on the fiddle, the quintet has plenty of talent to go around. Their new release, Stories We Tell, shines through with the notion that this band has not only the ability but the aspiration to push the boundaries and create a product that changes the way the listener perceives them. The EP kicks off with “Story” which opens up the listener to the true nature of the release, which is fusing their new and old vision.“1984” pours the first bit of emotion into the experience, offering a fast-paced and upbeat track that picks the tone up and moves into the newly polished electric vibe that the band has taken to, but keeps the fiddle shredding. “Hide and Seek” is the song on the EP that speaks to the country lover in all of us. The tempo slows a bit and the lyrics “the song between the trees/say it’s all gonna be alright” create a visual with the music, placing us on a warm day without a care in the world. Feelings like the ones caused by “Hide and Seek” seem to only be able to shine through from a heartfelt roots song. It is “Alibi” that scoops up the beat again, serving as the sly, rebellious track describing love in a rowdy setting. The ever sultry Jessica Jones joins the group on “Heaven and Hell” to give Stories We Tell the opportunity to showcase her incredible, soulful pipes — which is necessary on a ballad such as this. However, the true standout area on the song is the lengthy guitar solo that breaks in like a wrecking ball. “In The End” serves as the appropriate way to wrap up a product of love such as Stories We Tell. The song starts off heavy but picks up to give the goodbye a sweet, happy bop, as if to say, “it’s not goodbye, it’s see you later.” Ultimately, the EP proves to their followers that they are committed to evoking the feelings their music makes their fans feel and will continue on this path as they persevere in future projects. Coal Town Reunion has dedicated to their craft and assists in creating the Denver music persona that we need more of. The talent and ability to fuse with their changing creative process provides an act that our community of fandom can bookmark and continue to show up for. Be on the lookout for their summer shows and don’t miss out on this local treasure. via https://303magazine.com/2019/07/local-listen-60/

Colorado’s favorite outdoor venue is preparing for one of the funniest shows of the summer – and quite possibly the silliest to ever occur in the history of the venue. Now in his fourth decade as a pop culture icon, “Weird Al” Yankovic will make his Red Red Rocks debut alongside the Colorado Symphony, much to the delight of his fans. In honor of this milestone event, Weird Al fest will host their annual party at Red Rocks just hours before the show – and for any fans out there looking for an extra chance to get weird, this is one party you won’t want to miss. There’s a lot to love about “Weird Al” Yankovic. He’s parodied some of our favorite songs, everything from “I Love Rock N Roll” to “Ridin Dirty.” He dominated our television’s in the ’90s with specials and his own Saturday morning show, The Weird Al Show, not to mention his countless features on shows like The Simpsons. He even developed a cult-like following for his feature film UHF, which just celebrated it’s 30th birthday last week. Obviously, “Weird Al” Yankovic was born to perform – and he’s damn good at it. So it comes as no surprise that his fans are beyond excited to see him perform alongside the Colorado Symphony Thursday night. When it comes time for a show this big, it’s only natural that Weird Al’s fans would call for a celebration – and that’s exactly what Fest of Al plans to deliver. Any Colorado concert-goer knows that a show at Red Rocks simply isn’t complete without a little tailgating, and Weird Al’s appearance at the venue will be no exception. The party kicks off on Thursday afternoon, just a few hours before doors open for the show, giving fans an extra opportunity to celebrate their favorite musical comedian. Fest of Al will provide food, music and an all-around good time – making it the perfect chance for fans to get a little extra weird before the show begins. No tailgate would be complete without a good old fashioned barbeque – and in Weird Al’s honor, Fest of Al will serve up Twinkie Weiner sandwiches, a favorite from his cult film UHF. Die-hard Weird Al fans might know that he’s a vegetarian, so don’t worry, there will be plenty of vegetarian fare too. However, the event will be more than just a chance to eat unique Weird Al inspired food. There’s An Ape For That will also be spinning records before tossing them out into the crowd. Fans will even have an opportunity to commemorate the whole event by taking photos in a themed photo booth. “We’re a community group dedicated to people who love comedy, parody music and most of all, “Weird” Al Yankovic. When we found out Al was going to be headlining Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony – we knew it was the best way to announce where and when the fest will be next year,” said operations manager Cassie Cowan in a statement. Whether you’ve been a fan since the beginning, or just a casual fan who wants to have a good time, Fest of Al is sure to be a delight for anyone who chooses to attend. Though the event is free, Fest of Al recommends that attendees RSVP by midnight July 31 in order to receive information about the exact location of the event. Fans interested in attending can RSVP here. Tickets for his performance at Red Rocks Thursday night can be found on the AXS website. via https://303magazine.com/2019/07/fest-of-al/ Happy Wednesday! Here's this week's survey, which you can copy and paste and share as a comment.
via https://www.temptalia.com/survey-says-july-31st-2019/ ![]() Sex ShuffleNARS Sex Shuffle Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a translucent beige base chocked full of shimmer and slightly larger sparkles. It had semi-sheer coverage in a single layer, which applied evenly and had good shimmer/sparkle dispersion. The texture was lightweight, emollient without being too slippery, but it seemed to melt slightly against my lips as I applied the product. I did notice a bit of product that sank into my deeper lip lines, though it wasn’t noticeable from a normal viewing distance. This was one of the shorter-wearing shades in the range at a mere two and a half hours, and it was lightly hydrating over time. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$26.00/0.12 oz. - $216.67 Per Ounce NARS has reformulated their core lipstick range, which now includes 72 shades across three finishes: matte, sheer, and satin. The formula is supposed to go on "smoothly and evenly with a light feel" that is "long-lasting" and "resistant to bleeding and feathering." The sheer finish has "subtle, sheer color that shines," while the satin finish has "creamy rich color" and the matte finish has "intense color with a velvety finish." The matte finish has a very thin, featherweight feel to it, but they didn't feel clingy or too prone to dragging during application, though they were definitely a firmer texture in the tube. There was enough glide from the inclusion of dimethicone (first ingredient for the matte finish) that went on evenly, felt velvety but didn't feel as powder-like as some of the other more silicone-heavy matte lipstick formulas that have been released in the last couple of years. Most shades were pigmented and nearly opaque to opaque. The wear ranged from three to six hours with deeper, richer shades staying on a bit longer and leaving slight stains. They were comfortable to wear but felt more non-drying than particularly hydrating. The satin finish has more slip, feels thicker (though not actually thick or heavy) compared to the matte finish, and of course, there was subtle to light shine/sheen. They applied smoothly, comfortably, and for the most part, went on evenly and didn't sink noticeably into my lip lines but there was some variance between shades. They were typically semi-opaque to opaque in coverage with four to six-hour wear that was lightly hydrating. The sheer finish had coverage that ranged from semi-sheer to true medium coverage but most had some translucency to them, which gave them a sheerer finish. I found most of the shades I tried were buildable to some degree. The texture was a bit firmer, but they felt more emollient and "melted" a bit more against my lips than I recall the original line of lipsticks doing. Some shades applied well with even application and were flattering on, but there were a few that sank more noticeably into my lip lines. This finish tended to wear between three and five hours. I don't have many of NARS' original lipsticks in my stash (I have mostly Audacious as they haven't been releasing many in the core range) to compare to. The matte finish was definitely thinner, more matte, and had a velvetier look on lips compared to the original which had a subtle sheen to it. The satin finish seemed a bit more pigmented and not quite as luminous/glossy as the previous formula, while the sheer finish was creamier, more emollient, and was easier to apply. It didn't feel like a vastly different formula, but it felt a bit easier to work with (smoother, more emollient but still lighterweight and thin, far less slip than any of the Audacious range) and was more comfortable to wear across the board for me. I didn't notice any scent or taste, though there is "fragrance (parfum)" listed in the ingredients--it smelled neutral, not waxy but I just didn't get any scent. ![]() Belle de JourNARS Belle de Jour Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.12 oz.) is light-medium peach with strong, warm yellow undertones and a luminous finish. It had medium coverage (it is part of the sheer finish) that applied evenly and smoothly across my lips, though the color sank into most of my lip lines–it wasn’t that surprising as lighter shades like this (coupled with a more emollient texture) tend to do so. It was just barely visible in person to my eyes. The consistency was lightweight, lightly emollient but not slippery, and was comfortable to wear. It stayed on well for three hours and was lightly moisturizing to wear. Top Dupes

![]() MiramarNARS Miramar Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.12 oz.) is an almost a peachy-copper, as it swatched lighter and more golden compared to how it applied, which seemed to have a bit more depth from its base color and didn’t reflect the light as strongly. The texture was a bit drier, and this shade felt more like the matte finish than the satin finish it was listed as; it had a more “matte metallic” finish where there was shimmer but very little shine and had the thinness of the matte formula by feel. It had good pigmentation, though it qasn’t quite opaque, that went on fairly evenly and didn’t emphasize my lip lines noticeably. It wore well for four hours and was neither drying nor hydrating over time. Top Dupes

It had rich pigmentation in a single layer, though the firmer, denser consistency made it easier to use a lighter hand with it to achieve more buildable coverage if preferred. The powder was firm without being stiff, so I could pick it up with a brush, apply and blend out the color easily. The finish was luminous but didn’t emphasize my skin’s natural texture, and the powder could be layered for a more intense finish, as described. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before I noticed any fading. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$39.00/0.28 oz. - $139.29 Per Ounce The brand doesn't have a great description of the highlighter formula generally, just descriptions of each shade. The lightest shade--Stargazer--is described as "buildable" but the other two are silent with respect to pigmentation, and the lightest shade was quite pigmented. Since there was no general description, I'm holding the formula to the average powder highlighter's claims--pigmented, long-wearing, and blendable, except Stargazer, which I would expect to have "buildable" pigmentation. The formula has a denser, firmer texture, but it never felt stiff nor was it difficult to blend out on the skin. The coverage was semi-opaque and buildable with a high-shine to metallic finish. All three lasted eight hours on me. Browse all of our Melt Cosmetics Digital Dust Highlight swatches. Males and females gravitated toward this light and crisp hue and showcased various en vogue outfits on and off runways. Taken from street style vibes, this shade can be worn with any hair color, skin tone and body type — regardless of past fashion rules or guidelines. The versatility of the shade also advanced the fashion topic of inclusivity and the feeling of being comfortable in one’s own skin. Simply put, this shade of pink is not just for females, this color is multifaceted and should be introduced into the wardrobe masses. Dimensional Hues![]() On Garcia: Chino, $69.90, Suit Jacket, $228.00, V-Neck T-Shirt, $22.90, Brown Belt $44.90, Shoes, Price Upon Request. Available at Express. On Johnson: Belted Sheath Dress, $79.90, Purse, Price Upon Request. Available at Express. Danielle Earrings, $85.00, Mary Gene Bracelet, $125.00, Everlyne Bracelet, $60.00, Amiya Bracelet, $128, Reggie Ring, $48. Available at Kendra Scott. Model’s own shoes. The Lowdown: For this layered look, various blush hues were introduced — especially with model Bradley Garcia’s look. Here, he presented three different shades on the brighter side of pink and topped the outfit with brown components. The slightly dramatic color of the pink perfectly popped against his sun-kissed tan. To pull off this type of monochromatic look, choose perfectly matching colors or opt for slight distinctions within hues for the outfit, similar to an “all or nothing” approach. Model Charlee Johnsen’s belted blush dress mixed with her pale skin color allowed her beautiful red hair to shine through the outfit and become a focal point. The age-old rule that encouraged redheads to stray from wearing pink is no longer viable, as seen here. Authoritative Separates![]() Tie Ankle Pant, $49.99, Portofino Shirt, $24.90, Boyfriend Blazer, $108.00, Bucket Bag, Price Upon Request. Available at Express. Malika Earrings, $128, Mary Gene Bracelet, $125, Everlyne Bracelet, $60, Amiya Bracelet, $128. Available at Kendra Scott. Stylist’s own shoes. ![]() Suit Pant, $98.00, Suit Jacket, $228.00, Dress Shirt, $40.90, Tie, $29.99, Brown Belt, $44.90. Available at Express. The Lowdown: These blush separates showcase confidence, determination and fearlessness. Blended together, these sophisticated elements provided a business-like approach perfect for the office, event or speaking engagement. If too dressy for your wardrobe, an alternative approach would be to swap out two of the items for more casual elements. For example, the silk top would harmonize well with distressed jeans, heels or sneakers and the pants would suit a relaxed vintage-inspired t-shirt. The new Kendra Scott pearl jewelry accented the pink outfit Johnsen donned and her messy topknot provided a cool girl characteristic. The incorporation of casual hair and light makeup mixed with the dressier outfit approach allowed the outfit to speak for itself without hair overpowering the jewelry and neckline of the clothing. Garcia’s ageless suit revealed a dressier way for males to incorporate pink for the office, elegant date night or major event. Athleisurewear![]() On Garcia: Textured Shorts, $29.95, Hoodie, $19.99. Model’s own shoes. On Johnsen: Boyfriend Blazer, $108.00, Bermuda Shorts, $39.99. Kash Hoop Earrings, $58, Mary Gene Bracelet, $125, Everlyne Bracelet, $60, Amiya Bracelet, $128. Available at Kendra Scott. Model’s own shoes. ![]() Andi Necklace, $98, Lizbeth Earrings, $110, Gold Chain, Price Upon Request. Available at Kendra Scott. Sunglasses, $19.90. Available at Express. The Lowdown: Athleisurewear made a grandiose impact a couple of years ago and the trend of casual pieces survived many fashion seasons. MSMG, Prada, Louis Vuitton and others debuted the vintage look of socks with sandals at runway shows with complementary pairings of loose-fitting and relaxed pieces. Here, Garcia donned matching pink informal shorts with a hoodie. This easy pairing is suitable for anyone with the desire to be on-trend, yet casual and comfortable. The monochromatic nature of the outfit separated it from standard casual pieces. Johnsen demonstrated the collaborative combination of a dressy blazer mixed with white denim casual bermuda shorts and sneakers. Together, elements of various style divisions complemented one another and made way into a more casual category. Photography by Danielle Webster. Models Charlee Johnsen and Bradley Garcia.
