Internationally acclaimed Chef José Andrés and his nonprofit World Central Kitchen have donated $15,000 to Blackbelly and Arcana, two Boulder restaurants providing meals to vulnerable communities across Colorado throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Facilitating this partnership is Conscious Alliance, a Boulder-based nonprofit that brings healthy food to children and families in need, with an emphasis on supporting communities in remote areas and Native American reservations. This network of like-minded artists, musicians, food makers and fans usually gathers donations by hosting “Art That Feeds” Food Drives at concerts and music festivals and partnering with food brands that can yield large quantities of healthy meals. Conscious Alliance will distribute meals prepared by Blackelly and Arcana to locations throughout the state. READ: 35 Local Food and Beverage Businesses That Are Supporting Healthcare Workers Right Now Typically, Conscious Alliance distributes an average of 92,000 meals a month to economically isolated and underserved communities in Colorado. Since the coronavirus pandemic hit, it has distributed over 320,000 meals. Since March 16, when restaurants began closing, the 18-year-old organization expanded its reach to include school districts that serve a high rate of students receiving free and reduced lunches. It also started supplying food to drive-through distribution points and food banks. The Action Center, Montbello Organizing Committee pantry, Jeff Co Eats, Community Food Shares and Food Bank of the Rockies all receive donations from Conscious Alliance. In 2016, President Obama awarded Chef José Andrés with a 2015 National Humanities Medal at the White House for his work with World Central Kitchen. As public health disasters continue to occur worldwide, the organization has expanded its mission and now focuses on feeding hungry communities in the midst of crisis. His organization is also working with Frontline Foods — a national, volunteer-led organization with a chapter in Denver that also donates healthy meals to hospital clinicians. On April 30, the internationally acclaimed grassroots movement, Slow Food USA, announced the cancellation of its fourth annual Slow Food Nations festival, which would’ve taken place on September 11 – 13 in and around downtown Denver’s historic Larimer Square. The event usually attracts more than 30,000 sustainably-minded eaters, producers, chefs, farmers, speakers, industry leaders and more. READ: Slow Food Nations Continues to Prove Food Activism and Education Can Be Delicious “Gathering people together is a pillar of the Slow Food mission. However, the health, safety and well-being of everyone involved remains our top priority,” stated the festival’s executive director, Krista Roberts, in a press release. “Our team is working to create virtual programming this fall to support and gather this community, and we look forward to coming together in person once this crisis is over.” One of the festival’s current virtual programs is Slow Food Live, a free skill-share series wherein its chefs and merchants teach viewers from around the globe about a variety of topics, including (but not limited to) how to make zero-waste minestrone and horchata. The COVID-19 pandemic has strained nearly every aspect of the food industry, and Slow Food USA is directing its efforts to feed and support local communities during this time. The nonprofit organization recently established a National Resilience Fund designed to “sustain communities in the current crisis and build more resilient food systems in the long term,” according to its website description. Slow Food USA is an international movement and nonprofit organization that aims to “banish the degrading effects of fast food” and counteract the “universal folly of fast life,” as it phrases on its website. For over 30 years, Slow Food USA has campaigned for more sustainable farming, ranching and fishing practices to promote locally and seasonally based food systems that enrich both the planet and its people. The organization has a presence in over 160 countries and there are 150 local chapters in the United States. Applied, it had a natural finish that was skin-like–not quite matte but not overtly shimmery–and remained a touch dewy, despite drying down. The texture was smooth, lightweight, and spreadable as it felt more like a gel-cream, so it worked well over bare skin as well as layered over liquid foundation (even matte liquid foundation!). Applied with fingertips, it had more medium, buildable coverage, whereas a moderately-dense, angled brush yielded more semi-sheer to medium, buildable coverage. For true, sheer coverage, I’d recommend applying with a stippling brush. It looked almost opaque when applied but it sheered out quite readily, which was as designed, and it had to be layered (and it built up very well) for full coverage. It stayed on well for nine hours before fading visibly on my skin. FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent). Top Dupes
Formula Overview$32.00/0.22 oz. - $145.45 Per Ounce The formula is supposed to be "non-greasy," "sweat-resistant," "easy to blend" cream bronzer (or contour) with "sheer, buildable" coverage that has a "natural-looking" finish. The brand called out two shades specifically as contour shades--Amber and Toffee Tease--though they can certainly be used as applicable to one's skin tone and undertone. The coverage was semi-sheer to medium in one layer and buildable from there, though a lot of the initial opacity depended on the application. Per the brand, the product can be applied with fingertips (they mention "one tap") or with a brush (they created a denser, angled brush for this formula). What I found was that the formula had a tendency to diffuse and spread over the skin in a way that did sheer out the color in practice, so the blended out swatch was more in line with actual results. I think they were, on average, more semi-sheer to medium, buildable coverage than true, sheer coverage but they can definitely be applied lightly or blended out for true, sheer coverage. Fingertips, generally, apply the heaviest coverage across formulas and products, which was true here. When applied with fingertips, a swirl through the pan yielded more medium and semi-opaque coverage, while a pat or two of a fingertip into the product was good for getting the first layer in place (with more sheer to semi-sheer coverage) and building up coverage where desired. For brushes, something like a stippling brush yielded sheer to semi-sheer coverage and a denser, angled brush yielded more semi-sheer to medium coverage. The coverage built up exceptionally well as the product layered without becoming uneven in application or in actual texture. The product applied beautifully over bare skin as well as over foundation (I paired them with Fenty's Pro Filtr, which is popular but also more matte, so made for a good test base) as it did not lift up base products. The consistency was moderately emollient with good glide--it spread easily across my skin, which made it more fluid and gel-like in that way, and it wasn't tacky or so wet that it was hard to blend evenly or get to "stay" in place where I wanted it to stay (thus enabling me to blend out edges with ease). It dried down within a few minutes, but it retained its more skin-like finish despite not feeling wet to the touch. The test of blendability is often with deeper shades like Chocolate and Toffee Tease, which are significantly deeper than my skin tone, so any unevenness is much more noticeable, but they applied beautifully. I could see them working on deeper skin tones as they were likely designed for, but for someone who is looking for a darker contour shade and is lighter, they're easy to work with as well. The formula wore well for eight to nine hours, and it had a continued, gradual fading from there that was a flattering fade (it didn't just slide down and off my face!). I'd agree that it seemed sweat- and water-resistant as it didn't start to migrate, bleed, or turn patchy, though it could certainly be rubbed off with light pressure (fingertip, napkin, etc.), e.g. blot away excess moisture. Unfortunately for Colorado high school seniors, the coronavirus pandemic has compromised the typical ways that families and school systems honor the achievements of graduating students. Sporting events, dances and graduation ceremonies — all rites of passage that normally take place in person — have since been cancelled, postponed or migrated to the virtual realm. When an experience moves from 3D to 2D, as many have had to do to survive under physical distancing directives, the loss of dimension may register as a lack of luster. (Seeing the Mona Lisa in an online gallery instead of the Louvre lacks a certain je ne sais quoi.) That doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing, however, and that doesn’t mean it can’t be a meaningful experience. That belief is what propelled KGNU Community Radio (88.5 FM & 1390 AM) to host a virtual high school prom for graduating seniors enrolled in Boulder Valley and Denver Public School Districts. The three-hour dance event will begin at 6 p.m. on May 2 and will be part video conference and part live radio broadcast. DJ Erin Stereo, a two-time Westword Best of Denver award-winner, will curate the evening’s beats. KGNU’s own DJ and Denver program manager, “Deeprawk” Dave Ashton, will chaperone. Though anyone — even non-students — can enjoy the radio program, the video conference is limited to 50 senior couples, and formal dress is required. Students can add themselves and their date to the guestlist on a first-come, first-serve basis using their official school email address by filling out this form. Peers and parents can also nominate graduating seniors for prom royalty through this separate form. An official king and queen will be elected. Neither district will reopen their schools for in-person classes this academic year, but on March 25, the Boulder Valley School District tentatively rescheduled its high school commencement ceremonies for the week of July 20. At present, Colorado Governor Jared Polis and education officials throughout the state expect that schools will be able to hold in-person classes in the fall with physical distancing measures in place. This is also a good time to remind prospective listeners that KGNU is an independent local radio station that’s been on the air for more than 40 years, and does not broadcast any commercials. Six full-time staff members and more than 300 volunteers produce and govern the station. Tune in to KGNU’s “Virtual Prom” at 6:00 p.m. on May 2 at 88.5 FM in Boulder and Denver, 1390AM in Denver, 93.7FM in the Nederland and Ward area, 98.7 FM in Fort Collins and online at kgnu.org. via https://303magazine.com/2020/04/kgnu-virtual-prom/ The busy streets of Denver have acclimated locals into a routine of hectic scheduling that matches the cities effervescence. If you’re anything like me, this often means pushing passion projects aside for a later date that never seems to come. But now more than ever, our frantic lives have come to a halt as we all practice self-isolation. With all this being said, just because you’re in the house doesn’t mean that it has to stifle your artistry. 303 Magazine has come up with six easy DIY fashion projects to help you get through quarantine while keeping your creative juices flowing. From embroidery to bedazzling, check out how you can freshen up your wardrobe with some simple arts and crafts. The shops and boutiques mentioned below are accepting online orders and/or pickup orders. Embroidering JeansThe Lowdown: Jeans are great for DIY crafts because they’re durable and there are numerous ways to style them for any outfit. If you have a pair of jeans you don’t use anymore and just want to liven up, embroidery is an innovative way to do just that. Local craft studio Treelotta has several embroidery kits that you can stitch into your denim. The idea is pretty simple— you place the ring on the area you’d like to stitch and then follow the pattern. If you want a more polished look you can always try embroidering from scratch as well and make your own design. Either way you try this method will leave your jeans looking personalized and incredibly unique. Painting Unadorned ShoesThe Lowdown: Painting can be a very therapeutic way to relieve stress and practice focus and patience. While this activity is positive for you mentally, it can also help you customize your wardrobe. Undecorated shoes can act as the perfect canvas for your artistic pursuits. Local art supplies store Meininger has a variety of fabric dye and several types of paint you can curbside pick-up from their store. Make sure to check out examples of painted shoes for inspiration (like this), or just use your imagination as well. Tie-Dyeing a Sweatsuit SetThe Lowdown: This is an age-old craft that lives on through the decades. From summer camps to relaxed days in, tie-dyeing is the easiest way to completely change an article of clothing. Luckily for you, local store Adults and Crafts is selling tie-dye kits in a myriad of colors. All it takes is a sweatsuit set, a couple of rubber bands, and the colors you prefer. Make sure your desired piece of clothing is dry before pinching the middle and creating a tight ball. Next, make sure to place the rubber bands around the cloth to keep it in place. After that, use as many tie-dye colors as you want and let it dry for an extended amount of time. When it’s all dry make sure to put it in your washer and voila, you have the perfect tie-dye set. Ironing on PatchesThe Lowdown: Patches are by far the easiest and quickest way to amplify any article of clothing or accessory. From tote bags to jackets, iron-on patches are simple to put on almost any clothing canvas. Meraki Moon is selling the loveliest variety of iron-on patches that can cater to your individual vibe. Put your garment on a smooth flat surface, preferably an ironing board. after that just take out your iron and make sure to iron your patch over a sheet of paper for 45 seconds to a minute. Repeat for every patch and let it cool down once you’re done. Bleaching and Distressing a Graphic TeeThe Lowdown: Distressed denim has been on trend for quite some time now, but distressed graphic tees have made a comeback in recent years. Local boutiques like Lalovelyvintage have a vintage section with graphic tees. Although these T-shirts are cool on their own, here’s a quick way to make it more eccentric. Lay your T-shirt on a surface that you’re not afraid of getting a little messy. Make sure you’re wearing gloves and open a window so the bleach doesn’t overwhelm your senses. Similar to tie-dyeing you can place the bleach anywhere and everywhere before letting it sit for a while and rinsing it out. After it’s dry just take a pair of scissors and distress the T-shirt as you like. Bedazzling a Baseball CapThe Lowdown: Bedazzling anything brings back a nostalgia induced euphoria for the early 2000s. The early 2000s saw the likes of bedazzled jeans, tank tops, flip phones and more. Like many items from that time, bedazzling your clothing is coming back in a serious way. This trend might not be for everyone, but in case you’re interested, there are ways of doing this trend at home. One way of doing it is by purchasing gem stickers and craft glue from any local dollar store. Place the gems wherever along the brim and press down to ensure the glue sticks. If you need a unique baseball cap Banethrift is taking online orders from Depop, Etsy, and Poshmark. via https://303magazine.com/2020/04/6-diy-fashion-projects-to-spark-your-creativity-during-quarantine/ Lipstick is the one category that I feel can be done well by a lot of brands at all different price points, but I know that I can count on Giorgio Armani, Guerlain, Pat McGrath, Urban Decay, and Bite Beauty!

via https://www.temptalia.com/what-brands-are-most-reliable-for-lipstick/ ![]() Wild BerryNABLA Cosmetics Wild Berry Cutie Palette ($24.00 for 0.28 oz.) is a new, six-pan palette that included three mattes, one semi-matte, and two intense metallics. All of the shades had good pigmentation that ranged from semi-opaque to full coverage in a single layer. Despite being deeper matte shades, they blended out fairly well over bare skin and lasted for eight to nine hours. Alchemy 2.0 gave me a bit of fallout, but Bucolic Baby was very smooth and easy to work with. As a note, Venom, Botanic Juice, Bucolic Baby, and Blackberry are all listed as “Face” shades (effectively making them the Pressed Pigments in the palette).

Quick Shop: Ulta, NABLA, Beauty Bay![]() IncenseIncense is a medium peach with moderate, warm undertones and larger flecks of sparkle over a semi-matte finish. The Latex finish is hard to describe, as it’s a cream-powder with a bit of denseness to it, so a lot of those sparkles actually translate and adhere to the lid. Mine arrived with the pan of product shrunk, though it didn’t feel super dry, it did feel drier than past Latex Mattes I’ve tried. I’m not sure if it the formula could contract in size just from changes in temperatures without actually changing the texture overall. I had some fallout during application as a result, and I’d definitely say to use a lighter touch with it. The color wore fairly well for eight hours with light fallout over time. Top Dupes

Quick Shop: Ulta, NABLA, Beauty Bay![]() VenomVenom is a rich, pinky-berry with cool undertones and a matte finish. It was intensely pigmented, and a little went a very, very long way, so I’d recommend using less than you think you need and build up if necessary. The texture felt smooth, silky, and was blendable without being too powdery nor too firmly pressed into the pan. It stayed on well for nine hours before fading a bit, and there was light staining after removal. Top Dupes

Quick Shop: Ulta, NABLA, Beauty Bay![]() Bucolic BabyBucolic Baby is a light-medium, reddish-copper with flecks of gold and pink sparkle over a metallic sheen. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer with a really intense shine–it looked almost wet when applied (even when worked with dry). The texture was lightly creamy, smooth, and almost wet to the touch (though not an actual cream). The eyeshadow applied well to bare skin without fallout during application. It lasted nicely for eight hours before fading a bit. Top Dupes

Quick Shop: Ulta, NABLA, Beauty Bay![]() Alchemy 2Alchemy 2 has a translucent, almost peachy base with flecks of peach to teal shifting shimmer and sparkle. It had good color coverage, though it was comprised of a lot of shimmer, and it seemed to appear a little lighter when applied to my skin compared to the initial swatch. The texture felt almost wet to the touch, so it was emollient without being dense or actually creamy. It was very lightweight and thin, and the sparkles sat well on my skin–flatter–so there was minimal fallout when working with it with a dry brush. I’d recommend patting onto the lid with a fingertip, though, for less fallout. It wore well for eight and a half hours with slight fallout over time. Top Dupes

Quick Shop: Ulta, NABLA, Beauty Bay![]() BlackberryBlackberry is a rich burgundy with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It was intensely pigmented where a little went a long way, and it was easiest to work with using a lighter hand and a more precise brush. This approach makes it easier to diffuse and blend it out without getting a ton of fallout or over-applying it. The consistency was soft, silky, and smooth but was lightly powdery and had a touch of fallout during application and wasn’t the easiest shade to diffuse (but workable). The color stayed on well for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably. Top Dupes
