Staying at home can feel very singular, even when we know that the rest of Denver is doing the same. Colorado Drums Forward aims to unite those in isolation with the same collaborative energy that has Denver residents howling at the moon at 8 p.m. each night. The newest non-verbal trend happens to be drumming, banging on whatever you can makeshift into a percussion instrument — and it’s going down tomorrow night at 7 p.m. “‘Colorado Drums Forward’ is an artful communication campaign to help all Coloradans gain a sense of community and solidarity during this time of social distancing. The idea is to use the concept of a “drum circle” to allow individuals to participate in a singular event. It is a way to non-verbally communicate with family and neighbors around the state. The performance centers around percussion instruments but may include non-percussion instruments. Practically anything can be used to make noise such as cans, buckets, boxes, etc. The campaign is being put forward by Dazzle, the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts (CBCA), and Colorado Creative Industries,” stated the organization via press release. In an act of solidarity (or in an act of vengeance for the neighbors you may not like), make sure to get out your favorite percussion instrument (or anything you can bang on) and drum the night away with Denver.

This is an entry in an ongoing series for 303 Magazine, which will provide a range of local album reviews. It is our intention to highlight the talents of local musicians, whether veterans to the industry or newcomers. Like the bands, the album can be fresh or something we just haven’t had the power to take off repeat in the past few months. Check out previous entries in the series here. A Meazy has been perfecting his craft long enough to know when he has reached a particular height in his career. The lyricist took a break after 2018 to revive his skill and curate new material. With that has come Dead A$$, Meazy’s first release since 2017’s Meazy Shuttlesworth. With a title like Dead A$$, this release will nab anyone’s attention before the beats even fly to your speakers. The straight forward message from the title reflects the power with which the collection will impress in its listener. Meazy states that the title is a coined phrase he uses consistently, as he is sure of the product he puts out for his fans, and he stands behind its quality.
For many photographers, life and work in the time of the coronavirus has looked very different. With weddings, events and other gigs getting canceled left and right, it seems there are very few opportunities for these professionals to do what they love. But like many creatives, photographers have found a way to still capture the ongoing climate. That was the case for Wheat Ridge native Ethan Herrold. Traditionally a freelance photographer that works on everything from editorial to commercial shoots, Herrold decided to start this series after a simple walk around his neighborhood. “I began to notice just how ubiquitous the signs had become … so I grabbed my camera,” he explained. From there, Herrold traveled to other Denver neighborhoods to get a fuller picture of what this odd slice of life looks like — going from Capitol Hill to LoHi, RiNo and places in between. Most of these locales, he noted, all had a common tie. But one, in particular, stood out: “I think the most interesting sign I saw was Stowaway Kitchen’s in RiNo. They used 24 individual pieces of copy paper, each with a letter on it, to cover the entire front window,” he said. “I think it showcased the quiet desperation many restaurants are feeling; that, even in a digital world, many are turning to homemade, physical signs to attract business. Also, the individual pieces of paper were the most prevalent theme I saw between restaurants. I think it’s interesting that so many of these businesses had the same idea.” But despite the more depressing connotations of the signs, Herrold explained that restaurants are still acting as a reprieve for many. “Restaurants serve as a kind of oasis to ordinary life, with small groups of people often waiting outside to get their order (six feet apart and mask covered of course),” he explained. “It’s also one of the only times I could tell people were smiling under their masks.” Click to view slideshow.

The series is led by two of Denver Botanic Gardens’ horticulturists, Angie Andrade and Catharine McCord. Plant-based therapy is the practice of using plants to improve mental and physical health. According to the American Horticultural Therapy Organization, it can be used to improve memory, cognitive abilities, language skills and socialization. Many have found these therapy sessions to be beneficial and calming in stressful times. “With Therapeutic Thursdays we are hoping to foster our connection with our community when we aren’t able to open the doors to Gardens,” McCord said. “Our goal is to offer a weekly program that is educational, entertaining and provides engaging activities that people can use daily as they interact with what’s blooming outside their doors.” McCord hopes that the webinar will allow people to identify with their community during the current time of physical distancing. Community members are encouraged to come together, share stories and engage in activities all while sharing their love of plants. Past “Therapeutic Thursday” topics have included tips on houseplant care and studies on tree lifespans. However, “Therapeutic Thursdays” is scheduled for more weekly sessions. If you’re interested in growing rosebushes — Andrade will host a webinar in which she discusses rose care and how roses are metaphors for our own lives. If you’re a fan of tea — then register for the webinar on May 14 — where you’ll learn all about herbal tea blending. If you’re just in need of some guided meditation — you can virtually walk through the gardens on a meditative plant walk. “This program was designed to continue our goal of connecting people with plants,” Andrade said. “Plants and nature are an accessible tool for everyone right now to help us slow down and connect with something outside the daily stresses of the world today.” For those interested in learning more about the webinar — more information and weekly topics can be found on the Denver Botanic Gardens’ website. Each virtual session is held Thursdays at 2 p.m. The cost of registration is $8 per session, $5 for Denver Botanic Gardens’ members. All sessions are recorded for participants to watch again afterward — which is also useful for those who register for a session but cannot make the scheduled time. People of all ages are welcome to participate and only one registration is required per household. via https://303magazine.com/2020/04/denver-botanic-gardens-therapeutic-thursdays/ Previously noted in this 303 Magazine article, wedding season is officially here and masses of bridal parties are contemplating when their wedding days will come to fruition. Similarly, engagement season is upon us with many partners at a loss for where to shop and purchase engagement rings and wedding jewelry. Detailed below, four Denver based jewelry designers illuminate how customers can virtually shop for their most precious jewels from the comforts of their homes and even couches. Abby Sparks JewelryHow to buy it: To shop, visit the brand’s website here. The Lowdown: Abby Sparks Jewelry provides custom engagement rings along with unique and beautiful fine jewelry. During coronavirus, the local brand experienced a significant decline in sales like other retailers; however, the interest and attraction of shopping for engagement rings and fine jewelry continued to be relevant. “We’ve also developed our own virtual engagement ring try-on through our Instagram, @abbysparksjewelry,” Abby Sparks explained. “You can take a picture of your hand, open it in Instagram Stories and then search for “Abby Sparks Jewelry” GIFs, you’ll see dozens of our rings that you can fit to your hand and try on without ever leaving your house.” Still, in the midst of such an uncertain time in the world, the accomplished jewelry brand continues to spread love and the formation of special relationships. “Now is the time to be conscientious about celebrating the smaller things in life that may normally get overlooked like our relationships,” Sparks said. “We have more time together than we may have ever had, so my advice is to celebrate that connection.” Balefire GoodsHow to buy it: To shop, visit the brand’s website here. The Lowdown: Local jewelry brand Balefire Goods offers extremely remarkable and distinctive jewelry designs with a concentration for individualistic stones. “Sapphires are another popular and wonderful option for engagement ring stones as they come in a rainbow of colors,” Jamie Hollier, owner of Balefire Goods noted. We are also seeing a ton of people coming in with their family rings from their parents or grandparents as a starting point for their rings. Reusing the metal and stones is not only economical but it allows you to have jewelry that keeps your loved ones close.” The popular brand also shifted gears to offer customers virtual services. “We have an online booking system on our website where you can book a video chat to look at ideas, etc.,” Hollier said. “We also can work via email or text for custom designs as well. We actually have clients all over the country, so we are fortunate that we are already accustomed to working with people from a distance.” Shane Co.How to buy it: To shop, visit the brand’s website here. The Lowdown: Headquartered in Denver, the Longtime jewelry store, Shane Co., continues its legacy of fine jewelry and diamonds by providing customers numerous online tools alongside a three-step process to build custom engagement rings. “For those wanting to try on different rings from the comfort of your home, our virtual try-on tool allows you to do just that with a simple picture of your hand with your smartphone,” said Shane Co. Brand Manager, Mary Frances Joseph. “Image Search and Budget Buddy are two tools that Shane Co. exclusively has to help you shop online for engagement rings.” For the three-step process, Shane Co. recommends customers experience this to find their custom design. “We recommend our customers start by picking their dream setting – the part of the ring that holds the diamond in place – before choosing their center stone,” said Joseph. “Once a setting is chosen, we work with our customers to pick their perfect center stone. The last step in the process is really where the personalization comes in. You can add a decorative crown, custom engraving and coordinating wedding band to make your ring one of a kind.” The Diamond ReserveHow to buy it: To shop, visit the brand’s website here. The Lowdown: The Diamond Reserve (TDR) takes pride in hand-selecting each certified diamond for their engagement rings and fine jewelry. To accommodate customers, TDR offers virtual shopping services including video chats and 3D ring models to ensure clients are pleased with the design processes. “Meeting our clients via video chat allows us to get to know them and them to know us, to create a relationship, this is very important when designing an engagement ring, this is a purchase that signifies forever,” Kaeleigh Testwuide, the founder + owner of The Diamond Reserve said. “Before your ring is handmade right here in Denver, Colorado our team will 3D render your ring for you to see at every angle, you can make as many changes to your ring unit it is perfect at every angle!” via https://303magazine.com/2020/04/denver-engagement-rings-online/ I just pick one side that I want to use and forget about the other so I can store it upright in a glass like I do all my other brushes!

The finish seemed more natural-matte–not overtly shimmery but definitely not fully matte (even after it dried down). The texture was lightly creamy with moderate slip, but it was thin and more like a gel-like cream, so it spread beautifully over bare skin as well as over foundation. It also layered and built up coverage well, which was as intended, though I’d still say it was more pigmented than described. The formula made it forgiving to use as it naturally sheered out when I started to work with it on my skin, so it had to be built up to get full coverage. It had more medium to semi-opaque, buildable coverage applied with fingertips or a moderately-dense, angled brush. For true, sheerer coverage, I’d recommend using a very light touch (like tapping your finger in the pan and then onto the skin) or a stippling brush. It stayed on nicely for nine hours on me before fading visibly. This shade wasn’t called out as a contour, though the line markets itself as bronzer and contour, and it would be a bronzer on some skin tones. It would work as a contour on light to medium-tan skin tones (possibly one or two shades darker than that) for those who prefer something with a bit of warmth. Formula Overview$32.00/0.22 oz. - $145.45 Per Ounce The formula is supposed to be "non-greasy," "sweat-resistant," "easy to blend" cream bronzer (or contour) with "sheer, buildable" coverage that has a "natural-looking" finish. The brand called out two shades specifically as contour shades--Amber and Toffee Tease--though they can certainly be used as applicable to one's skin tone and undertone. The coverage was semi-sheer to medium in one layer and buildable from there, though a lot of the initial opacity depended on the application. Per the brand, the product can be applied with fingertips (they mention "one tap") or with a brush (they created a denser, angled brush for this formula). What I found was that the formula had a tendency to diffuse and spread over the skin in a way that did sheer out the color in practice, so the blended out swatch was more in line with actual results. I think they were, on average, more semi-sheer to medium, buildable coverage than true, sheer coverage but they can definitely be applied lightly or blended out for true, sheer coverage. Fingertips, generally, apply the heaviest coverage across formulas and products, which was true here. When applied with fingertips, a swirl through the pan yielded more medium and semi-opaque coverage, while a pat or two of a fingertip into the product was good for getting the first layer in place (with more sheer to semi-sheer coverage) and building up coverage where desired. For brushes, something like a stippling brush yielded sheer to semi-sheer coverage and a denser, angled brush yielded more semi-sheer to medium coverage. The coverage built up exceptionally well as the product layered without becoming uneven in application or in actual texture. The product applied beautifully over bare skin as well as over foundation (I paired them with Fenty's Pro Filtr, which is popular but also more matte, so made for a good test base) as it did not lift up base products. The consistency was moderately emollient with good glide--it spread easily across my skin, which made it more fluid and gel-like in that way, and it wasn't tacky or so wet that it was hard to blend evenly or get to "stay" in place where I wanted it to stay (thus enabling me to blend out edges with ease). It dried down within a few minutes, but it retained its more skin-like finish despite not feeling wet to the touch. The test of blendability is often with deeper shades like Chocolate and Toffee Tease, which are significantly deeper than my skin tone, so any unevenness is much more noticeable, but they applied beautifully. I could see them working on deeper skin tones as they were likely designed for, but for someone who is looking for a darker contour shade and is lighter, they're easy to work with as well. The formula wore well for eight to nine hours, and it had a continued, gradual fading from there that was a flattering fade (it didn't just slide down and off my face!). I'd agree that it seemed sweat- and water-resistant as it didn't start to migrate, bleed, or turn patchy, though it could certainly be rubbed off with light pressure (fingertip, napkin, etc.), e.g. blot away excess moisture. The festival was originally scheduled to occur from June 18 – 21 at Jam Ranch outside of Grand Junction. Kane Brown, Dan + Shay, Carrie Underwood and Toby Keith were slated as its headliners. All tickets purchased for this year’s festival will automatically be valid for the 2021 Country Jam, scheduled for June 17 – 20, 2021. This year’s ticket holders are even guaranteed to have the same seat numbers and/or campsites for next year’s festival. Country Jam organizers are also offering its patrons the choice to refund their tickets if next year’s event isn’t in the cards for them, in spite of all the added perks. Beginning May 1, those who purchased festival tickets through the Country Jam ticketing page can request a refund. The refund request portal will close on May 31. Fans who did not purchase tickets directly through the official Country Jam website and who would like to be refunded are instructed to contact the party they originally purchased tickets through. “We always want to stay true to the core spirit of our events, and given the current factors at play, we didn’t see a path forward to producing the festival you all know and love,” states Country Jam’s public explanation of the cancellation. “This process takes time and all parties involved are working incredibly hard to expedite the process to ensure everyone who is entitled to a refund receives it as quickly as possible.” Refunded seats and campsites will be re-available for purchase once tickets for the 2021 Country Jam officially go on sale. It had rich color payoff that adhered evenly and smoothly across my lips without tugging, but it didn’t sit as well on my lips as I would have liked. The lipstick had a lightweight, lightly creamy texture that was dense and a bit more substantial, which, unfortunately, led to the product separating along some of my deeper lip lines. It wasn’t noticeable in person initially, but it settled more noticeably over its five-hour wear time. On the upside, the formula was lightly hydrating. Formula Overview$55.00/0.1 oz. - $550.00 Per Ounce The formula is supposed to be "richly pigmented" and have a "luxurious, velvet matte finish." The majority of the shades are semi-opaque to fully opaque with lightweight, velvety textures--creamy enough to glide on nicely but not enough slip to feel slippery or slide around on the lips when worn. The wear time varied from shade to shade with richer shades lasting over six hours. The formula was comfortable to wear and often lightly hydrating. There's a vanilla scent but no discernible taste. ![]() True CoralTom Ford Beauty True Coral Lip Color Matte ($55.00 for 0.1 oz.) is a neon, deeper reddish-coral with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage in a single stroke, which applied somewhat evenly, but I was surprised it wasn’t perfect. These types of hues are often done right more often than something lighter. The texture felt lightweight, creamy without being too slippery (almost more like a powdery cream), and was comfortable to apply and to wear. The color stayed on decently for five hours, but there was minor settling into my lip lines over time–the vibrancy made it harder to see it in person. The cubs are currently unnamed and their sex has not been determined. Their mother, a four-year-old lioness named Kamara, will take care of them behind the scenes in a den for two months before gradually introducing them to the rest of the pride. “We are watching Kamara closely to make sure she’s showing appropriate maternal behaviors, like nursing and grooming,” said assistant curator of predators Matt Lenyo, in a press release. “She learned a lot by watching Neliah and interacting with Tatu last year, which really prepared her to be a mom. We’re seeing a lot of positive signs that things are going well, and will continue to keep a close eye on her and the cubs in these critical first days and weeks.”
The father of the two cubs is Tobias, a four-year-old male brought over from the Buffalo Zoo to the Denver Zoo in late 2018 at the recommendation of the Lion Species Survival Plan (SSP), which works to create genetically diverse populations of lions within Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) institutions. The number of African lions worldwide has been cut in half over the past 25 years, and the species listed as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The SSP’s program leader, Hollie Colahan, works at the Denver Zoo. In the summer of 2019, Tobias and another female in the Denver Zoo’s pride, Neliah, became parents to another young lion, Tatu. The Denver Zoo closed to the public at 4 p.m. on March 16 due to the coronavirus outbreak, but animal care professionals have continued to provide vital nutritional, medical, emotional and physical care to the Zoo’s nonhuman residents. The exact date that the Zoo will resume its normal operations is still under assessment. The Zoo relies on ticket sales and public events to fund the care of its animals, so it set up an Emergency Response Fund to keep operations running without access to its main sources of income. It has almost reached its goal of raising $20,000 in donations — help push them over that threshold by donating here. Continue to explore and learn about wild animals online through the Denver Zoo’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube platforms, where it regularly posts “Zoo to You” virtual safaris.via https://303magazine.com/2020/04/lion-cubs-denver-zoo/ |
