Last week, I posted part one and part two of different color combinations for some fall-look inspiration. In the spirit of all things autumn and eyeshadow palettes, I wanted to share some custom palette ideas for the season — it’s definitely more challenging (and pushes me creatively) when it it’s about creating a much larger, cohesive color story. I don’t know if there’s every a time where I’ll be over greens and muted neutrals. Here are seven color stories I’d have loved to have seen released! I ended up doing digital mockups through Photoshop first, and then going through and finding real shades that fit what I was envisioning. Remember — the purpose here is inspire you to pull out some of the shades you already own. There’s absolutely NO WAY! I would ever recommend or expect that one goes out and purchases all these single eyeshadows. ? About This Series

The pencil was so-so; it worked decently as a liner along the edges of the lips to get a more precise edge and/or prevent feathering. It didn’t work well all-over, so it couldn’t be used to even out the natural color of the lips or to improve longevity of the lipstick. The lipstick was pigmented, long-wearing, and comfortable to wear, which made it consistent with the Lux Lipstick formula.

![]() SarahSarah is a medium-dark, reddened burgundy with subtle, warm undertones and a cream finish. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that felt thicker without being heavy, so it had excellent coverage and didn’t emphasize lip texture. The lipstick stayed on nicely for six hours, left a stain behind, and felt lighlty hydrating. FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent). Formula Overview$7.00/0.12 oz. - $58.33 Per Ounce The formula that is supposed to be a "creamy-matte" that "glides on like butter, doesn't feather or bleed, and lasts so long you'll forget you're even wearing it." The majority of the shades were quite pigmented with full color payoff in a single stroke with a few in the more semi-opaque coverage range. The texture was, on average, smooth, lightly creamy, and not too thick or too thin, so there was no tugging during application but the color didn't feel slippery while worn, which made them easier to apply straight from the tube and low-maintenance on the lips. They tend to dry and wear down to a soft matte finish within one to three hours of wear, and while they are very lightweight on, they hug the lips more as they become more matte (compared to initial feel). The wear time has been between four and six hours for most shades, and most shades were non-drying to lightly hydrating. They were vanilla-scented but had no discernible taste. ![]() Lucky Rat TailLucky Rat Tail is a medium-dark, reddened burgundy with warmer undertones and a flat, matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage in a single layer, which was hard to build up. The texture was thin, somewhat clingy, and seemed stiffer compared to other shades in the same formula. While the formula has a tendency to feel clingy, this one looked clingier than others and emphasized my lip texture. It would be a product that I would use as a lip liner only but didn’t work well to fill-in all-over. It lasted for five and a half hours and felt drying over time. Top Dupes

One result of the financial challenge facing hospital systems is furloughs of Colorado doctors, nurses, administrators, executives and others. Financial loss in Colorado healthcare stems from multiple factors — prolonged decrease in volumes of non-emergency patients since February, cancellations of non-emergency surgeries and procedures, increased costs due to plans to increase ICU and inpatient bed capacity and for essential medical supplies, ventilators, personal protective equipment and construction among other expenses, combined with loss of revenue. Colorado doctors and nurses have shared their perspective on the furloughs, some describing the impact on their salaries and work as “frustrating and stressful” and “infuriating.” It is a complex, confusing twist that the some of the most at-risk, essential and valued community members are finding themselves furloughed during the pandemic. Facing Financial Losses![]() Denver doctors came out to show their support at a Denver BLM protest. Photo by Brittany Werges. The Colorado Hospital Association (CHA) has not collected data about how many hospitals and health systems are furloughing employees, or which groups of employees are being furloughed and at what rates. Centura Health, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Denver Health, Kaiser Permanente Colorado and UCHealth currently report no furloughs or layoffs. Senior Vice President of CHA Julie Lonborg said that in March and April, Colorado hospitals were projected to lose $4 billion as a result of the pandemic’s impact. CHA represents 106 Colorado hospitals, including all of the state’s acute care hospitals. Lonborg said that prior to the pandemic, 40% of Colorado hospitals were not making enough revenue to cover expenses, while some had emergency savings and reserves. Lonborg explained that as hospitals faced uncertainty and lacked information about the virus in March and April, patients were discouraged from seeking care unless absolutely necessary. “We had an overnight fallout of patient volume. That revenue stream stopped,” she said. Simultaneously, hospitals were preparing for high volumes of COVID patients by increasing numbers of inpatient hospital beds, ventilators and more. Predicted losses in Colorado are now being reevaluated, but Lonborg said that CHA believes losses will be less dire. “We do know that our [hospital patient] volumes have not returned to pre-COVID levels, despite the fact that it’s safe for patients to come back at the levels that they were in January,” Lonborg said. Decreased volumes have been tracked since July. Adjusting to the Pandemic![]() Photo courtesy of UC Health on Facebook. Colorado hospitals made immediate internal cost decisions to be able to invest, including employee and expense adjustments. “Furloughs are a very tiny component of what hospitals have done to adjust their expenses and match revenues more carefully,” Lonborg said. “Clinical staff are our lifeblood. You exhaust every alternative before you [furlough] a clinical employee.” Spokesperson Caitlin Jenney shared the following part of a statement from Children’s Hospital Colorado. “Hospital leadership has been committed to protecting our employees and implemented numerous cost-saving measures across the pediatric health system to help mitigate the financial impact of the pandemic.” Lonborg explained that hospitals and healthcare systems selected measured like puzzle pieces to attempt to cover losses, and hopefully avoid furloughs — a combination of pandemic pay (implemented by HealthONE, for example), paid time off, hiring freezes, staff redeployment, out-of-state hospital staff sharing and downsizing programs. UCHealth spokesperson Dan Weaver explained that UCHealth asked employees to take paid time off this summer. Senior executives gave up their paid time off or took leave without pay. Kaiser Permanente Colorado had already been making significant changes in Colorado to be more cost-effective over the past two years, according to a September 14 statement from spokesperson Nick Roper. The healthcare system paused hiring of nonclinical positions and cut discretionary expenses, among other cost reductions. Virtual care options also increased. Some hospital systems received federal CARES Act and paycheck protection funding that helped cover a portion of revenue lost. Following this relief funding and improved knowledge and plans for COVID patient care, new job opportunities presented at some Colorado hospitals, Lonborg said, that allowed previously laid off or furloughed employees to return to work. Weaver said, “Overall, March through June revenue decreased $204 million for UCHealth system-wide, and we saw large expenses related to our pandemic response. During this time, we received $160 million in CARES Act funding.” University of Colorado’s School of Medicine is implementing furloughs of employees earning above $60,000 as a base salary and officers, according to the CU System website. The furlough is a 4.6% salary decrease (one furlough day per month for employees) and a 10% salary decrease (two furlough days per month) for system officers. The length of the furloughs is decided by the department at University of Colorado. We reached out to the University of Colorado Department of Pediatrics Director of Finance and Administration Mike Jonen, who declined to comment. Supporting the Frontline![]() Photo by Amanda Piela To support healthcare employees, Lonborg said that plans are being made to address the long-term ramifications of the pandemic. Frontline workers have been uplifted by community outreach and gratitude through social media posts, healthcare hero shoutouts, nighttime neighborhood howls and individual hospital support, including emergency preparedness plans, staff debriefs and access to behavioral health, mental health and chaplin resources. Lonborg also warned that Colorado hospitals are seeing patients with warning signs of significant health problems who delayed care due to the pandemic — CHA highly encourages patients to seek care this fall. READ: A Master Guide To Mental Health Resources in and Around Denver Lonborg emphasized the importance of handwashing, wearing masks properly, social distancing and following state and local guidelines to continue to reduce COVID patients in Colorado. “The state and healthcare systems are benefiting from [people taking these steps],” she said. via https://303magazine.com/2020/09/colorado-healthcare-employees-furloughs/ ![]() TranscendRare Beauty Transcend Positive Light Liquid Luminizer HighlightRare Beauty Transcend Positive Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight ($22.00 for 0.5 oz.) is a light, rosy copper with moderate, warm undertones and a bright, intense metallic sheen. The intensity of the glow and shine was what set it apart from a lot of other “rosy copper” kind of highlighters, which offered more depth with less brightness (which may be preferable, depending on what you’re after!). The consistency was very fluid and more serum-like–thin, emollient, and glided readily across my skin–that dried down for the most part and was transfer-resistant (but not transfer-proof). The liquid highlighter applied evenly to bare skin as well as over foundation, as it wasn’t prone to lifting it up, and it spread well. I recommend following the brand’s instructions of “one to two dots” for application to get more semi-sheer, buildable coverage, as the product was quite pigmented if going straight from the doe-foot otherwise. Because of its fluidity, it was easier to use less and build up than a lot at once. It wore nicely for eight and a half hours before showing signs of wear. Formula Overview$22.00/0.5 oz. - $44.00 Per Ounce It's supposed to have "superfine, light-catching pearls" that can be built up from "soft sheen to pure pop." Per the description, it is intended to be used as a standalone highlighter--applied over liquid, powder, or cream--or mixed with foundation. It worked well on bare skin as well as over foundation, and it was mixable, though the style of applicator made it less readily mixed into foundation compared to a dropper. I had slight lifting issues with certain shades, but it was less prone to doing so overall. The coverage was more controllable than with the liquid blush, but a little went a fairly long way; the brand recommended using "1-2 dots," which yielded a softer sheen with more medium to semi-opaque coverage that could be sheered out. It was buildable and easy enough to layer for higher coverage, if desired, and it was easier to build up than it was to really sheer out from over-application of product. The brand doesn't comment explicitly on the pigmentation but rather bills it as having a buildable glow (as in the shine/shimmer, which is finish and not actual color!). They show opaque swatches in the promotional imagery and recommend the same application as the liquid blushes (which they do say are very pigmented). The texture was lightweight, emollient, and more serum-like and spread well whether I used fingertips or a brush. I didn't find it was particularly prone to lifting up base products or foundation, but it was easiest to work with using smaller amounts and building up or applying to the back of my hand and swirling a brush into it, which seemed to help it "dry out" a bit and be less emollient. It didn't have a fully transfer-proof dry down, but it did softly set so it had shine and sheen but didn't slide around while worn. The shades wore well for eight to nine hours on me before fading a bit. In general, I think it's a very good formula but like the liquid blush by the brand, there is a bit of a learning curve. I'm still on the hunt to a linkable video or source, but I had some readers say they heard it in a livestream/live that the brand designed the packaging to be easier to work with for those who have mobility issues in their hands (like arthritis). The rounded, knob-shape was easier to grasp, especially as it was more of a soft matte than glossy matte, than a typical highlighter. It would be great to see ridges running around the knob/top, though, as it would make it even easier to grip! Browse all of our Rare Beauty Positive Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight swatches.
