Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Sleeping Mask, and then both Natasha Denona 28-Pan Palettes (I have both from the very original launch, but the ingredients have changed a bit over time, and I’d like to have updated, better-quality photos since they’re all permanent shades).

It had a lightweight, thin consistency that was more gel-like, which was particularly easy to work with over base products (and still worked well over bare skin!) as it did not lift up product nor did it create patchiness. I found the liquid highlighter easy to spread across my skin and blend out along the edges with the included applicator as well as with my fingertips. It had sheer coverage that was buildable to medium coverage, but it was the sheerest of the four shades in the formula. It dried down quickly and didn’t remain wet, but there was enough time to apply and blend. This shade stayed on well for eight and a half hours on me before fading a bit. Top Dupes

It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, though it didn’t apply as evenly as it could have, and separated along my deeper lip lines. It appeared slightly pinker when actually applied to me–I think that’s the influence of the faint translucency. The consistency was lightweight, creamy enough not to tug on my lips but not enough to slide around during wear. It stayed on well for three and a half hours and was lightly hydrating over time. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$18.50/0.1 oz. - $185.00 Per Ounce MAC Lipstick comes in a variety of finishes, and the pigmentation and wear tend to be dependent on the finish. The sheer finishes, like Lustres, tend to wear for only a couple of hours and have sheer coverage (as designed) and are non-drying. Some of the original Matte shades have a stiffer, drier formula, while newer ones have a more velvety, silicone-feel to them, and the latter are creamier, more comfortable to wear, and easier to apply, but most Matte shades are quite pigmented and long-wearing, though some are drying. The Amplified and Satin finishes tend to have good pigmentation, lightly creamy to moderately creamy consistencies with a bit of shine, and moderate to long wear with deeper, richer shades wearing longer. The Frost and Metallic finishes have the most variance between shades with coverage ranging from semi-sheer to opaque with average wear and non-drying to slightly drying formulas. Bosom FriendMAC Bosom Friend Lipstick ($18.50 for 0.1 oz.) is a light, rosy beige with subtle, warm undertones and a natural sheen. The consistency was lightweight, lightly tacky, and melted slightly as I applied it to my lips, so initially there was a touch of drag but not none after a few seconds of use. It had good color coverage that went on evenly and didn’t emphasize my lip lines; there was a smidgen of product that sank into my lip lines but not enough that it was noticeable from a normal viewing distance. It wore well for four hours and was neither drying nor hydrating on me. Top Dupes

There are some mattes in the palette, but depending on your skin tone, you’ll likely want to grab a couple of light and more mid-tone shades to bring everything together. What I liked most about this palette was that you could get several different looks out of the palette! About This Series

It had rich color payoff in a single layer, though the powder itself was soft and yielding enough (without becoming powdery) that I could use a lighter hand with it to build up color as well. The consistency was smooth to the touch, silky, and blendable, while the finish had a very low-level sheen–almost matte but not quite–that made the powder sit well on bare skin. It lasted well for eight hours on me before fading visibly. Top Dupes

Nobody understands this more than Kyle Theret and Parker Orms, owners of Encounter Hat Co, a customizable, high-quality, felt hat company that offers customers a barrage of bespoke hat styles to choose from. The art of wearing hats has seen a precipitous decline and become elusive so most of us have resigned our heads to a hatless life. Being both functional and stylish, Encounter Hat Co is proving that hats are having a full resurgence. They come in handy on those bad hair days, they give us a touch of class and sophistication and, most importantly, hats have the surest ability to add an interesting and unique accent to your outfits while simultaneously boosting your confidence. Finding one that is well-fitted can be synonymous with finding your signature piece and Encounter Hat Co is doing just that with their customers — one hat at a time. Theret and Orms are artists with a truly rare range of expression which reflects a deep personal passion for artwork when it comes to making the hats and the final product. We recently sat down with them to discuss what inspired them to be hat makers. 303 Magazine: First, for those readers who aren’t familiar with Encounter Hat Co, can you tell us about the company? Encounter Hat Co: Encounter Hat Co. is a progressive thinking hat company that is introducing a whole new level of customization to the urban market while introducing the quality of the hats in the western world to create the best product for everyone from a first-time hat wearer to the most fashionable socialite in Milan. 303: How would you describe your hats? EHC: Our hats are made of the highest quality material while being the most custom fitted hat one will ever have. The experience of seeing and feeling your hat being steamed, cut and shaped to your exact preference will make buying any other regular hat impossible. 303: What inspired you to design stylish hats? EHC: After ending our careers in sports, we both moved back from Europe and had a desire to infiltrate the fashion scene and hats were our natural direction. 303: Could you tell us about your background and fashion and design experiences? How did you both get started in the fashion industry? EHC: It all comes back to our own personal journeys from living in world fashion capitals to being a third-generation hat creaser. Using the experience and knowledge from the western hat world and our desire to create a unique quality product, we’ve been lucky enough to partner in various types of fashion shows, celebrity collaborations and private events while having our hats worn by people on almost every continent. 303: Is there a typical Encounter Hat Co customer? EHC: Our most common customer is somewhere between 22-45 who is either in touch with the most modern fashion trends or somebody that is breaking out of their norm and stepping into the next level of personal confidence and expression. 303: Why do you think hats are such an essential fashion accessory? EHC: We view hats as the shoes of the head; the finisher to the outfit. When you look at style and beauty, symmetry and uniqueness are key, so the visual appeal of a hat on a head is the aesthetic completion of any wardrobe. 303: What do you love most about Encounter Hat Co? What is the most enjoyable thing about your work? EHC: The most enjoyable part of Encounter is the process. The feeling a customer gets when they put on the best fitting hat they’ve ever had makes it impossible to have a bad day at work. The fact that our job is to create something special that people enjoy is not lost on us and we value the opportunity to do so every time. We love that people wear our hats with their best outfit for the most important situations. 303: Where are the hats made? How do you ensure the quality of your hat production? EHC: The majority of our hats and materials come from America, although we’ve had select hat bodies imported from Italy. We’ve created a network of hat blockers, leather makers and satin manufacturers to create a unique product. We ensure we have the best hat bodies to start with, then, while the customer is in front of us, we cut, shape and crease the blank canvas to everything from a cowboy hat to a fedora. 303: What do you think is Denver’s signature mark in the world of fashion and artisanry? EHC: Denver has quickly become a hub for artists and creative individuals of all mediums. We believe that with this new found identity, Denver can also become a place that the coasts look inward for inspiration and direction. Denver is unique not only because geographically it is in the middle of the mainland, but also because of the ubiquitous nature of the residents living within. If the fashion follows the people, Denver will be a leader in the fashion world of the near future. 303: Could you briefly describe the process of crafting one of the hats you make? EHC: Every one of our hats starts as a blank canvas, open crown wide brim body. From there we steam, cut and mold the hat to the exact specifications of our client. We do it all by hand, live, so the experience of creation is absorbed by us and the customer. It would be like if you went to Nike and they measured, cut and designed your shoe exactly to your foot, right before your eyes. 303: The fashion for wearing hats declined after the 1950s, but there has been a resurgence in recent years. What do you attribute this resurgence to? EHC: The resurgence of hats can be attributed to the resurgence of quality in fashion. Everything from the internet to modern fashion trends, it has been easier for people to recognize quality. The classiness that is associated with wearing a felt hat is just as relevant to this generation as the people that wore hats in the past. 303: For those people who haven’t worn a hat before but are considering it, can you give any tips for choosing a hat for the first time? EHC: Start with some research on the levels of quality within the hat world, you will immediately notice the difference. Then decide the occasions or situations you see yourself wearing the hat. Then go crazy and become hat connoisseur. 303: With such an array of hats on offer, how do you guide customers and advise them on a particular choice of hat that is suitable for their purpose and ensure they are the correct size? EHC: For many, the quality and color is the thing they care most about. Every hat we make is fit perfectly to the head of the customer so the feel of a custom hat is not comparable to a hat off the rack. Some people want a hat to wear every day and some desire to make the biggest fashion statement they can. We make that happen. 303: What has your journey been like over the past few years? EHC: Within three years, we went from creasing old cowboy hats at a few events to getting ready to open our 2000-square-foot headquarters right here in Denver. We’ve met challenges that were unexpected but have kept true to our vision and kept progressing. We have traveled to different countries, made hats for celebrities and professional athletes while connecting with the local market through events and collaborations with the best creative companies in the city. 303: What features of Encounter Hat Co make it different from other brands on the market? EHC: The experience. When one walks in to buy an Encounter Hat, they will be met with the most customization and personalization of any product they’ve ever had. They can sip a whiskey or a glass of wine while the process is carried out live. It will be the most rewarding fashion experience a person will have. 303: Social media platform are a new showcase for designer brands. What do you think about the power of social media on buyers’ decisions? EHC: Social media has created parody in fashion because now people can see an extensive range of styles from all over the world. It also allows content creators to introduce new marketing and branding techniques that can be useful as a business owner. For us, social media is the hub of our content and the best way to introduce people to the company that may not have ever before. It is important to value social media while also getting out in the real world and becoming relevant within communities. Now, because of social media, there can be a pocket of people in a different country that “randomly” have your hats but that’s exactly how fashion trends start. Worldwide fashion can stem from a small group of teenagers in one random city and social media is the road beneath those wheels. 303: What is next for you? EHC: The next step is finishing the build out of the headquarters in Denver and expanding our network. We want to become a signature destination within the city and for travelers visiting the state. Our goal is to keep expanding through the community and let the products speak for themselves. Look out for the new shop coming this summer! All photography by Rebecca Grant. Model Dana Martin. As the sun sets, the five band members reminisce about the time the spent at Treefort as the feed each other popcorn and pass around plates of appetizers. The evening feels less like an interview and much more like a family dinner. Of all the things Denver has to love about the local music scene, bands like Knuckle Pups are at the top of the list. Knuckle Pups is one of the younger bands within the music community. The quintet has been a part of the local scene for more than a year, however, it wasn’t until just a few months ago that their final member joined the group. At first, Knuckle Pups consisted of vocalist Oliver Holloway and drummer Tomas Campos, who started the group after playing in other bands together. After laying the foundation for the band, Holloway set about finding the right people to join them. He ran into his old classmate Olivia Hendricks in a bar, and shortly after the chance encounter, Hendricks joined the group along with her Omnichord. The group found bassist Chelo Aguirre through a post on Craigslist, but something was still missing. The final member, guitarist Chloe Greene, was spotted at an open mic — and the rest is history. While it may have taken longer than average for Knuckle Pups to find all their members, it was well worth the wait. The members of the self-described soda punk band are friends first and foremost — the music is secondary. In fact, some of the band members even learned to play new instruments for the band. “It’s about the right people more than anything else,” said Holloway in an interview with 303 Magazine. “For me, collaboration is so much better with people who are stretching and learning at the same time. And we’re all meeting in the middle of this cool unknown area. I think that the end result is something that’s way more interesting sonically.” Taking the extra time to find the right people to create with has certainly paid off for Knuckle Pups. The band played their first live show alongside Saintseneca and Trace Mountains, to a sold-out Larimer Lounge. That show took place in October, and a few things have changed since then, including Greene joining the band. However, even though some things have changed, many things have stayed the same for Knuckle Pups including their focus on building community and creating music they want to listen to.
For bands like Knuckle Pups, there’s no place better than Denver to break into the music scene. Denver’s unique location makes the scene isolated enough that young bands have opportunities to play shows with bigger bands that travel through town. However, it’s still a fair amount of work to build a community of other bands and musicians you like playing with — but Knuckle Pups is ready to do the work. “Music has always been equally about the actual art of creating something that you love,” said Holloway, “but also about the sense of work that it takes to bring people together. There’s so much you do behind the scenes as a musician. You’re constantly working to try to bring people into the fold.” For the indie-rock quintet, building their community is as much of a focus as creating music. “I really believe that music and community are so intertwined,” said Holloway. This devotion to the music community is one of the things that makes the band so much fun to be around. The group truly wants to build a community of not only other musicians but also of fans. For Knuckle Pups, music is a unique form of expression that allows them to connect with others. “There is a real serious lack of genuine community in our culture. Everything is so regimented,” said Holloway “Music can really transcend that.” Musically, the group is focusing on creating music they like and are proud to share with audiences. “We’re not worried about fitting into a certain genre,” said Greene. “We’re just like, ‘let’s make some songs we can dance to and that other people can dance to.’ It’s more about — what do we want to do on stage? What do we want to give to the audience? We want to feel like we’re creating together.” The future is never certain for anyone, but Knuckle Pups is excited to see where this journey takes them. After releasing one short EP and playing some local shows, they’ve found themselves in a position of having to turn down shows because they’re already playing so many. With so much support as a young band, it’s clear that Knuckle Pups is doing things right. There’s no doubt their future is bright. If you’re one of the many Denver music fans, this band is one you’ll want to watch. Be sure to catch one of their live shows and be sure to stick around and introduce yourself after the show — they love to make new friends. You can keep up with Knuckle Pups by following them on Instagram. All Photography by Karson Hallaway. via https://303magazine.com/2019/04/knuckle-pups/ When you think of Golden you typically think of hiking, climbing, mountain biking and easy access to I-70. The historic downtown is very western and old-timey and you wouldn’t have any idea that there is a unique and delicious seasonal restaurant just around the corner from the famous Woody’s Pizza. Brandon Bortles is changing the stereotype and diversifying downtown Golden with his restaurant Abejas. “I want to over-deliver. I want people to be surprised at the food we do out of this little kitchen in Golden,” he explained. The small, farm-to-table restaurant seats about 50 people and caters to locals, faculty of the School of Mines and show-goers of the Miners Alley Playhouse. The decor is spring-y and bright, paying homage to the restaurant’s namesake — the bee. Bortles explained that the restaurant’s name came about because him and co-owner Barry Dobesh were known as “the B’s” throughout their friendship. “Bees conjure up the right images of gardens, pollination and agriculture,” said Bortles, “so we went with it.”
Abejas’ menu changes constantly with the seasons and availability of local ingredients so the style of dishes ranges from bold and spicy to fresh and simple. From the light snow crab salad and yuzu beets to the flavorful seared sea scallops and lamb chop, the menu will please any palate. The restaurant is open for weekend brunch, weekday lunch and dinner and recently started a Sunday small bites menu where you can get five small plates for $10 each to try out new dishes that aren’t on the regular menus. Bortles also has another restaurant in the works that should bring even more diversity to Golden. He saw an opportunity for a new restaurant as well as a need for more diverse cuisine in the area and will open up a fast-casual ramen shop this summer. The shop will cater to students, faculty, locals and anyone who is looking for a warm bowl of ramen on the West side of town. As Golden starts to branch out from its typical burger-and-fries restaurant scene more upscale restaurants will attract Denverites to the area for more than just the outdoor scene. Hiking trails, cute shops and a nice meal? You might want to stay a little longer than planned. Abejas is located at 807 13th St., Golden. Open for lunch Tuesday – Friday 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m., dinner Tuesday – Sunday 5-9:30 p.m. and brunch Saturday – Sunday 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. via https://303magazine.com/2019/04/abejas-owners-introduces-small-bite-sunday-and-a-new-ramen-shop-this-summer/ |
