While immigration issues are frequently debated in American politics — most of us have never experienced life as an immigrant or refugee. That’s exactly why Alejandro G. Iñárritu — successful Mexican film director — came up with the concept of CARNE y ARENA. CARNE y ARENA is a virtual reality experience that allows visitors to take a firsthand glimpse at the lives of immigrants crossing the US – Mexican border. This Oscar-winning work was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and has been featured around the world. Yet for the next couple of months — Stanley Marketplace in Aurora will be home to this powerful experience. Iñárritu developed this project with help from Mexican and Central American refugees — who each shared their own personal testimonies of how and why they immigrated. The virtual reality film has no actors — visitors will walk alongside real immigrants who have reenacted their experiences. If you visit CARNE y ARENA, you’ll be taken along for a multi-sensory experience like no other. Iñárritu and his team have thought of nearly everything. From temperature changes to wearing a backpack during the virtual reality portion of the project — every detail has been thought out to allow viewers to truly experience life as a migrant. The first thing you may notice is how dark the installation is — meant to mimic the conditions of crossing the border at night. You’ll also see a piece of the actual wall taken from the U.S. – Mexico border — which truly sets the scene as you enter the experience. In the virtual reality section— which is around 20 minutes long — visitors walk alongside a group of migrants as they traverse the desert landscape. You will be requested to take off your socks and shoes and walk on sandy ground — a small detail that makes the experience so much more realistic. Eventually, the group of migrants is stopped by border patrol agents. This portion of the film is adrenaline-inducing and can even be frightening — a mirroring of the emotions felt by actual refugees crossing the border. What stands out the most about this experience is the use of virtual reality technology. Virtual reality has been in development for years, but has only recently become popularized and accessible in gaming. Many people may have never experienced virtual reality before — buying a headset can be pricey. In order to incorporate VR technology into this project — Iñárritu and his team enlisted the help of PHI Centre — an arts organization based out of Montréal. PHI Centre describes its work as intersectionality of art and technology. A challenge the team faced was optimizing the virtual reality technology to travel with the experience. “When we were discussing the optimization of CARNE y ARENA, we wanted to ensure that there was no compromise on quality,” representatives from PHI Centre said. “We agreed that the cinematographic experience needed to be of the highest quality possible while also making it wirelessly accessible to allow for a free-roaming experience in the space.” Visitors will find that the virtual reality experience truly is seamless. It is surprisingly easy to forget that you are wearing a headset. CARNE y ARENA truly depends on flawless technology in order to deliver a realistic and profound experience. PHI Centre representatives also shared that virtual technology seems to be the way of the future — especially for art. The technology allows for artists to control every aspect of how their art is received — including the surrounding environment. Work is also being done to allow users to meet with friends over VR, encouraging social interaction — something that is a breakthrough during the coronavirus pandemic. The intersection of art and technology in CARNE y ARENA was a risk that Iñárritu took when developing this project — yet the final result is nothing short of mind-blowing. When you put on the VR headset — you will experience hope, anticipation, anxiety and ultimately fear. You may be eager to rip the headset off and return to the comfort of Stanley Marketplace. What is most important to remember — however — is that this is a real experience faced by people every day. So far this year — 400,000 migrants have attempted to cross the US – Mexico border. For them — the luxury of ripping off a headset does not exist. While the logistics of immigration law are a hot topic in politics — this art experience should not be a controversial one. Instead, it should serve a reminder of our privilege and it should deliver a lesson of empathy. CARNE y ARENA is open through January 30. Tickets must be purchased online and are $35 – $55, depending on date and time. Visitors must be 15 or older, children 13 -15 must have a signed waiver and parental accompaniment. Stanley Marketplace is located at 2501 Dallas Street, Aurora.

Each Tuesday around lunchtime a line can be found forming outside the Fort Collins residence of Sam Graf. At 1 p.m., a makeshift table in the driveway starts filling up with stacks of traditional Chinese to-go boxes, each one containing seven of that week’s flavor of dumpling. The smell wafts through the neighborhood, with the morsels being steamed or otherwise finished on an outdoor stove — so long as the weather permits. Sometimes there is ramen broth, other days banh mi or rice bowls. There are usually musicians hanging around, helping to get the hundreds of individual pieces into the hands of a growing cult following. Wayne — Graf’s mastiff mix — is there, lounging by the fire pit. The dumplings themselves are given out by donation only, with a Venmo tag and a mason jar set out for cash. This is Big Trouble Little Dumpling. Click to view slideshow.Well before Big Trouble, Sam and his brother Jordan opened Music City Hot Chicken in downtown Fort Collins in 2016. The celebrated counter-service joint serves Nashville-style bird with a distinct punk rock atmosphere — a holdover from Graf’s time playing with post-punk and emo outfit Smile and a Shoeshine that also informs the newer project’s general aesthetic. The brothers grew up in Fort Collins, and Sam’s mom Jane Krueger still lives in the area, contributing watercolors for promotional material while Jordan handles all of the spraypainted murals that lace the restaurant’s walls. Since closing its doors towards the beginning of quarantine, Music City has remained to-go only since it reopened in May. Click to view slideshow. While Big Trouble’s current incarnation can certainly be attributed to COVID-19, the project has been in the works for several years. “I visited New York in 2016, where I was awakened to the world of dumplings,” said Graf. “I’ve always been really fond of dumplings, I think they’re the perfect food,” he continued. Graf introduced his dumplings over the course of several dozen pop-ups — including multiple Friday night events slinging at Pinball Jones and some others onsite at Music City. On March 26, Graf and his rotating team — which has included appearances from Music City’s kitchen manager Steven Skinner and KREAM Kimchi‘s Virgil Dickerson — introduced their first home service. Initially serving on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays the project has since been pared down to a weekly. “Monday afternoon I’ll spend a couple of hours prepping,” said the chef. Dumplings are put together on-site, being folded indoors while watching ’80s movies — anything Kurt Russell, Escape From LA, Rambo, Fist of Fury, plenty of kung fu and of course Big Trouble Little China all remain in rotation. Social media has been important in developing Big Trouble’s reputation and informing diners regarding the weekly menu, though Graf says much of the interest has developed by word of mouth. The daily totals can vary slightly, though generally, each Tuesday will see the team producing over 500 pieces — each one imbued with the casual irreverence of the cinematic source material. While dumplings aren’t by their very nature punk rock, Graf’s renditions have attitude, sharing the best qualities of the genre — loud, punchy, DIY and ultimately built to uplift the community. And much like the music, great joy is compressed into an experience that may only last minutes. While Graf expected the attraction to at some point peter out, the project’s popularity has only continued to grow. “People were still hanging out in the ice rain,” smiled Graf. Some days Graf will donate proceeds to a BLM organization, with other week’s assets being put back into the undertaking. Click to view slideshow.Even with the offerings being fairly whimsical, there are staples. The dumplings are named after characters from the eponymous film, with the Lo Pan coming with chicken, garlic and jalapeno. The Gracie Law is filled tempeh, garlic and shitake, with the Miao Yin seeing a generous helping of Vietnamese-style beef and pork. The genre-bending selections, including the Jack Burton — a cheeseburger dumpling — and a special pizza dumpling both speak to the cuisine’s universality as the ideal vehicle for flavors unrestricted by borders. As good as the dumplings are, the Gangnam Style Ramen Broth is the real revelation — transforming the restaurant’s scraps into an inspiring base for endeavors in home soup-craft. “It’s been an easy thing to do because we have an enormous amount of trimmings from Music City,” said Graf. While there’s certainly a great deal of allure in Big Trouble’s novel setup, Graf says he’s been speaking with realtors about the possibility of opening a brick and mortar. On top of a stable menu of dumplings, Graf plans on including a marketplace selling house-made sauces, chili crisp, pickles, kimchi and an assortment of black vinegar. It also would appear much of the same energy that permeates the house will still be on display. “I’ve toyed with the idea of having Big Trouble Little China on loop with subtitles,” said Graf. Dumplings can’t help but provide a succinct look into not only a chef’s culinary predilections but parts of their personality. Big Trouble’s have a tune to them — a richness of spirit to tie all the flavor together. Music City Hot Chicken is located at 111 West Prospect Rd. Unit C, Fort Collins. It is open every day for delivery and pickup from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Updates for all things Big Trouble Little Dumpling can be found on its Instagram. It is a 52-year-old nonprofit organization with a compelling mission. Since the first store opened in 1968, arc’s goal has been to fund and advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. When Lloyd Lewis stepped on as arc CEO in 2005, he took that mission to an entirely new level. “In 2003, I had a little boy born. His name is Kennedy and he has Down syndrome,” Lewis recalled in an interview with 303 Magazine. Originally coming to Denver with IBM and most recently serving as the CFO for Displaytech, the birth of his son changed his career path. He immediately got involved in scientific research and advocacy for Down syndrome. “It really became the core basis of meaning in my life,” said Lewis. Soon thereafter, he was recruited to be the CFO of arc and became the CEO later that year. Click to view slideshow.“I am trying to create a better life for my son Kennedy. More opportunities, more inclusion, more support, and trying to do that more broadly to help all Coloradans with intellectual disabilities,” Lewis expressed. Arc only had around 10 employees with disabilities when Lewis joined the company. Now, they have over 350. “It started with me realizing that we needed to walk the talk and employ the people we serve,” he stated. As employees of arc, they are arc Ambassadors. “For a lot of our ambassadors, their work at arc becomes one of the most important life experiences they have,” Lewis explained. With 80% of people with intellectual disabilities being unemployed, arc gives them a chance to contribute, make a difference and build their social network. In addition to work experience, arc provides disabled individuals with a unique opportunity to gain a post-secondary education. At arc University, volunteer teachers teach classes such as Finance, Social Media Safety, Relationships and Boundaries, Fitness, Sign Language and Photography. “If they participate in 6 of the 12 classes offered, they get a Bachelor’s Degree, 9 of 12, a Master’s Degree and 12 of 12, a Ph.D.,” said Lewis of the program. Arc’s University program was meant to fill a need for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to grow, learn, gain experience and overcome challenges. They even put on a formal commencement ceremony for their graduates every year. “As they walk across the stage, you would think you were at a Harvard commencement,” Lewis described, “They take a lot of pride.” Click to view slideshow.Even during the pandemic, which has taken a toll on many businesses, arc hasn’t ceased their charitable efforts. Being designated an essential business, they have distributed over 60 tons of food to people in need, given 6,000 masks to individuals with intellectual disabilities and donated art supplies, books and bedding to groups serving vulnerable children, families, homeless shelters and seniors. “We are discharging our essential business designation with as much effort as we can muster,” said Lewis. As for the future of arc, Lewis says they will continue to raise money for the cause that fuels their company; supporting and advocating for people with disabilities. Raising over 100 million dollars during his tenure for the arc chapters, the goal for the next 15 years is to target 150 – 200 million dollars in funding. In addition, he also plans to double the number of employees with intellectual disabilities and their overall workforce. Lewis finishes, “The future of arc is to continue to grow our impact on the state dramatically.” All Photography Provided by arc Thrift Stores via https://303magazine.com/2020/11/arc-thrift-store/ Not usually! If something could be used in the same area in different ways–like using a cream eye product as an eyeliner and an eyeshadow–yes, but if it’s for eyes and lips or cheeks and lips, I usually find it performs well for one but is just so-so for the other (or even poor).

It had more semi-opaque color coverage in a single layer, which made it more pigmented than marketed and one of the more pigmented shades in the original lineup. The texture was more watery and thin when it was first applied, but the formula developed into a moderately tacky, more gel-like consistency that didn’t feel heavy but was more noticeable on. The color applied fairly evenly but had some build up along the inner area of my lips that was hard to prevent from happening. This shade lasted well for over six hours and felt moisturizing over time. FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent). Top Dupes
Formula Overview$38.00/0.2 oz. - $190.00 Per Ounce The formula is supposed to be a "lip stain with a luminous, glowy finish" that is hydrating and "long-lasting." Unlike the original Water Stain, which is described as an "intense" and "high-impact color" formula, these are a sheerer offering. The coverage ranged from semi-sheer to more semi-opaque but most were medium in coverage. The texture was very lightweight, watery, and felt a bit cool and wet as they went on initially. They develop into a tackier, thicker consistency that feels smooth and more substantial, though not heavy, which gives the formula better longevity (six hours or so). They left behind faint stains. I found it wasn't the easiest formula to work with, and it was extremely reactive to any lingering oils or moisture on my lips prior to application, so it was critical to remove any lip balm and blot dry (even water droplets after drinking water would interfere). The darker shades in the range tended to apply unevenly or settle into lip lines noticeably consistently. The formula was hydrating and comfortable to wear, though I could taste the floral fragrance whenever I ate/drank. Browse all of our YSL Water Stain Glow Glossy Stain swatches. It had semi-sheer to medium pigmentation in one layer, which applied unevenly and had visible areas of streakiness along with areas where more pigment was apparent and other areas that were sheer. This particular shade didn’t seem as prone to getting into my lip liens as some of the other deeper shades in the range, though. The consistency felt lightweight, more watery and thin as it was applied, but it developed a much tackier, more gel-like texture after a minute or two. It wore well for five and a half hours and felt hydrating while worn. FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent). Top Dupes

While there, she grew attached to a baby rhino whose mother had been poached when she was just four weeks old. Rhinos nurse every one to two hours for the first six months of their lives, so she and the other volunteers would wake up every two hours to feed her. This experience made a lasting impression on Finkelstein and is the reason she and her mother — Dawn Kaprielian — opened Lekker Coffee in RiNo. Finkelstein grew up working in her family’s bar in California. She loved the camaraderie of the locals and knew she wanted to open something with her mom after moving to Denver several years ago — she just wasn’t quite sure what that would be. Kaprielian had been running her grandfather’s bar for 10 years and was interested in moving to Denver if they found a good opportunity. After spending that summer in South Africa, Finkelstein’s dream began to form. It was only fitting that she open a coffee shop to support rhinos in none other than the RiNo neighborhood. “When I was there I fell in love with their mission,” said Finkelstein. Care for Wild works to rescue, rehabilitate, rewild, release and protect this keystone species and Finkelstein hopes to spread awareness through Lekker. “When I moved here I noticed that there were little rhinos in the bike lanes and everywhere throughout the neighborhood. It was just a perfect fit,” she said. Lekker plans to donate 10% of profits to Care for Wild each quarter as well as host classes to teach the community about the nonprofit. “We’re trying to get really involved with the community right now,” said Finkelstein. The coffee shop’s name comes from the Afrikaans slang word “lekker,” — pronounced “lek-uh” — meaning tasty, great or fantastic. “It’s such a positive, fun word,” said Finkelstein. The shop itself is similar. The first thing you see upon walking in the door is a bright, geometric mural of a rhino painted by Pat Milbery of So Gnar Creative. The back wall is filled with more art that gives the shop an eclectic yet homey feel. “We want people to come hang out and we want to get to know everyone. It’s more like a family,” said Finkelstein. Click to view slideshow.Lekker serves coffee from Novo along with pastries from Black Box and homemade breakfast burritos on the weekends made by Kaprielian herself. “We sold out in under an hour last weekend,” said Kara of the breakfast burritos. Lekker’s signature drink is a horchata latte but if caffeine isn’t your thing you can get a turmeric or adaptogenic latte to get your warm drink fix. The two also hope to offer liquor in the shop for happy hour in the next few weeks. Finkelstein and Kaprielian bring a cozy, family-run business to RiNo along with awareness of an important cause. Help support Lekker — and the rhinos — by visiting the new coffee shop and get a dose of happiness while you’re at it. Lekker Coffee is located at 3460 Larimer St, Denver. What is Singles Day?It’s a shopping event that originated in China and has become the largest shopping day worldwide (both in-stores and online). We’ve seen a lot of beauty brands participate during the event in the last few years, and this year is no different! Singles Day 2020 is November 11th, 2020, but brands and retailers have already started their promos, though some will be one-day only.
via https://www.temptalia.com/singles-day-sales-2020-makeup-beauty-deals/ Naughty NudeHuda Beauty Naughty Nude Eyeshadow PaletteHuda Beauty Naughty Nude Eyeshadow Palette ($67.00 for 0.59 oz.) is a new, rose-toned neutral palette with a mix of finishes and formulas across 18 shades. Per the brand, there are 5 different formulas within it. It’s not the most user-friendly palette with so many formulas as some apply just fine with dry brushes and others really work best with a fingertip or a dampened brush. The mattes seemed more blendable and better-performing, overall, compared to some past offerings by the brand, though they were a softer, more powdery formula. The marbleized eyeshadows were easier to use than anticipated but can be hard to visualize how they will appear when putting together a look as they end up mixing to a color. In general, the more sparkly and metallic shades were better applied with a fingertip to minimize fallout and improve evenness in the laydown of product.

PassionPassion is a medium plum base that leaned slightly warmer in tone paired with cooler, blue-to-violet shimmer that contrasted against it. There was less of a shift as it was shimmer in contrast to the base. The texture was lightly creamy, thin and not stiff to work with, so it yielded opaque coverage that blended out well along the edges. It wore well for eight hours before showing signs of fading. ShamelessShameless is a brighter, light-medium coral-orange base with flecks of cooler pink and gold sparkle throughout. The texture was lightly creamy and more emollient to the point where the added slip made it harder to apply the color evenly and to build it up to greater opacity (it was more medium in coverage otherwise). There was also some fallout that occurred if I tried to build up the color. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading noticeably. Top Dupes

HardHard is a medium brown with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had less overt shimmer as it had a subtle sheen. The texture was more like a cream-powder eyeshadow in feel–more emollient and felt like I could push on it like a cream product but behaved more like a powder eyeshadow once it came into contact with my skin. It had rich color coverage that applied evenly and was fairly blendable but worked better with a denser brush for diffusing the edges. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading noticeably. IrresistibleIrresistible is a brighter, medium rosy copper with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic finish. The texture was lightly creamy and more emollient, but it felt more like a powder eyeshadow than a cream one. Flower PowerFlower Power is a light-medium yellow with moderate, warm undertones and flecks of pink and gold sparkle throughout a more metallic finish. It had opaque color payoff that adhered fairly evenly to bare skin, though it was easier to work with by patting into place with a fingertip or using a slightly damp brush. The consistency felt lightly emollient, dense but not thick or too firmly-pressed into the pan, and was blendable along the edges. It stayed on well for eight hours before creasing noticeably. SlipperySlippery is a glossy base with a tinge of pink and gold pearl paired with a subtle sheen. It had some tackiness, too, but it wasn’t overly thick. In order to get greater coverage out of it, one needs to use a toothpick or a tool to break up and mix all the pearls with the base, as just using it with a brush or fingertip from the surface resulted in next-to-nothing coverage (it was intended to have “sheer” coverage, per the brand). The glossiness did cause other products to break down a bit and crease. I felt it worked better as a tacky base for increasing intensify of some of the shimmer shades, though it sometimes made it harder to blend out matte shades. Top Dupes

TantricTantric is a brighter, medium gold with strong, warm orange undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The texture was lightly creamy and more emollient, so it applied better with a fingertip or a dampened brush than a dry brush, though a dry brush was still workable–it was just more prone to fallout and wasn’t as even in the initial laydown of product. This shade wore nicely for eight hours before creasing faintly. Top Dupes

ProvocativeProvocative is a medium-dark pink with moderate, warm undertones and flecks of pink and gold micro-sparkle over a more pearl-like sheen. DesireDesire is a brighter, medium red with strong, warm orange undertones and a metallic finish. The texture was more cream-like, slightly thicker, and it was harder to apply it with a dry brush as a result. I had the best luck using fingertips to smooth it into place and then a rougher brush to diffuse the edges. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer but was harder to work with to build up or even out the color. It wore decently for eight hours before creasing on me. Top Dupes
