There are gems and misses from both, so it’s not something I’d make a blanket statement over. I think that high-end products tend to have finer, more consistent powder products (like eyeshadows), but I think the influx of smaller, competitive brands (like ColourPop) that aren’t your...

Wandering around backstage at Red Rocks, I came across a slew of pictures and signatures depicting every historical moment the monoliths had been a part of. It was awe-inspiring, looking at the world through the lens of Hendrix, Carole King and most recently Billie Eilish. Multi-instrumentalist for Death Cab for Cutie, Dave Depper, couldn’t help but gush with me as well. “You know what my favorite piece of trivia is about this place? It is the one stop that the Beatles made in the US that they did not sell out. And I don’t remember what the reason is. I don’t know if it was weather or something like that. But it was on their first US tour or their first tour where they made it out West and, and they did not get to capacity here.” We sat in some overly plush chairs backstage and talked about Death Cab hours before he would play indispensable solos during “We Looked Like Giants” and “Cath…” and I would be watching from row 18. Death Cab for Cutie has been all about renewal since its inception in 1997. Ben Gibbard began Death Cab as a solo venture before taking the original members under the umbrella in 1998. Chris Walla and Gibbard created innovative pieces of music, peaking the moment that Translatlanticism hit the shelves in 2003. The band kept on churning out works of lyrical art, soundtracking every teenaged Millenials long car ride staring out the window. Their discography is an endless stream of feeling, threading melancholic lyrics and piano arpeggios to the seams of some broken dream. And then, the band took a hit. Walla left and Gibbard remained, and there was a period of unrest, a slew of mixed-bag reviews for later albums. The band kept on touring and kept on creating, and the fans kept on coming. In walks Thank You For Today, Death Cab’s 2018 release, an album that traces back to an earlier sound, similar to classic Death Cab records. Gibbard expanded the band, welcoming in Depper and Zac Rae as permanent members. They had played with Death Cab before, but this album was their first shot at collaborating. Depper talked about the call, the once in a lifetime experience, followed by the fear that he would be “the guy that joined and screwed up Death Cab for Cutie.” I’d argue that he’s far from it. Their newest album showed some humility — leaning on the sounds that made the band what it is today while changing tides, lyrically pushing the bounds of the audience through subjects more akin to the qualms and problems of 30-somethings. On Tuesday night, newer songs like “Summer Years” and “Gold Rush” got the same reception as classic Death Cab hits on the setlist, furthering the perception that yes, they are back, in all of the ways everyone has been asking for. Mitski made a one-off stop for this leg of the Death Cab tour at Red Rocks and she delivered an opening act that one can only expect from a character such as herself. She mimicked aerobic exercises on a white table and chair with knee pads strapped to her legs and a microphone perched on the table. She sprawled and crunched on her set pieces, paying no mind to how laying down and exercising at high altitude might affect her voice. Because she’s Mitski — it didn’t. She effortlessly sang through it all, her falsetto piercing through the bustling crowd as everyone tried to cram through the sold-out show. Mitski is no joke. Listening to Be The Cowboy at home is an aperitif in comparison to the live rendition. She’s intense and unapologetic, even when her lyrics drip with insecurity and self-awareness. “Your Best American Girl” from her 2016 album Puberty 2 felt completely foreign in a live setting — which was a good thing. The record relies on the heaviness of the guitars halfway through the song, Mitski relies on nothing in person but herself. She sings each word with a purpose and it feels like it’s mostly for her enjoyment. Depper and I both hadn’t seen her play. We were both, up to this point, silent fans. I can’t speak for his verdict, but I left her performance realizing that Mitski is not, in her own words, “everyone’s flavor,” but if you’re willing to expand your palate, you might find a new favorite. Death Cab for Cutie entered after a short intermission and they dove right into their body of work, taking the timeline of their music seriously, shorting no one of their favorite songs. There were moments where the entire world felt suspended in mid-air. “I Will Possess Your Heart” felt like a marathon, leaving the audience out of breath but elated. “Soul Meets Body” permeated perfectly. Gibbard was ever honest, his performance never faltering. His unique tone stung through “What Sarah Said” and cheered through “No Sunlight.” Throughout the dips into the previous decades, Death Cab brought out their new record just the right amount to satisfy their tours namesake, but not enough to deter. One of the highlights from their new record was “60 & Punk,” with Depper’s recounting of the recording process of the song echoing in my head.
Coming back for the encore, Gibbard entered with a sole guitar and played “I Will Follow You Into The Dark.” The room was filled with voices, at one point leaving Gibbard to direct a crowd of newly minted musicians — the audience — through the chorus as he held back. We took the reigns because he allowed it, and that seemed like the tone for the evening. A subtle webbing of fans through an intricate conversation between band and audience led gently by the performers. The band would leave us on some endless shore, carried away by the intricate drum patterns and melodies hitting our chests like waves. What was said outside of the lyrics was as powerful as the words themselves — especially for the final song of the night, “Transatlanticism.” It’s a song that hits your core and this isn’t lost on anyone, including the bandmates. Depper mentioned it was his favorite song to perform at Red Rocks every time he’d been there, and no matter how expected that answer may be — there’s a reason for it. The construction of the song built around the hushed tones of the audience, everyone’s eyes glued on the stage. People that had already filed out of the amphitheater stopped to listen and sing along with Gibbard, with Depper, with everyone that felt fixed in that moment. The ending notes felt like a farewell worth hearing. Through personal trials of life and the changing tides of music, Death Cab for Cutie remains. The addition of bandmates has only created a new movement in their life-long symphony, and we went along for the ride on Tuesday night, catching the moment in its fruition. The matte eyeshadows tend to be a little more powdery, though soft and finely-milled, in the pan, while the shimmers have a creamier, dense consistency. It had good color coverage in a single layer, which was buildable to full coverage with slightly more product or with a wet brush. The eyeshadow was more loosely pressed in the pan, so there was some powderiness when I used it. The pigmentation was opaque in one pass, but it was a shade I’d recommend pressing and patting into place rather than sweeping it on to avoid fallout. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer with a soft, smooth consistency that wasn’t powdery nor too firmly pressed in the pan. The formula felt more finely-milled compared to past ColourPop blushes–more like a blend between their pressed highlighters and pressed blushes to me. The blush formula is supposed to be buildable, though, and you can definitely use a lighter hand with it to achieve more buildable coverage, I’d never describe it as such–it is quite pigmented. It applied well, blended out easily, and lasted for eight and a half hours on me. Top Dupes
Formula Overview$7.00/0.21 oz. - $33.33 Per Ounce The formula is supposed to go on "smoothly" and have a "natural and healthy flush" that has "long wear" and "can be layered to your desired intensity." It is a lightly to moderately powdery powder blush with semi-sheer to semi-opaque, buildable color payoff. The consistency has a drier, thinner feel and though it feels silky to the touch, I found it the type of powder blush can be tricky to blend out evenly on the skin, depending on one's skin type or base preferences. The drier the skin/base, the better the formula would blend, but any natural oils or slip caused the blush to go on unevenly and was difficult to blend out. The wear was between seven and eight hours on me on average. Browse all of our Colour Pop Pressed Powder Blush swatches. Here's this week's survey, which you can copy and paste and share as a comment.
via https://www.temptalia.com/survey-says-june-26th-2019/ 2019 has been a rough year for festivals. Major festivals like the Governor’s Ball evacuated due to weather, Backwoods Music Festival experienced a helicopter tragedy due to high winds — and this year — Sonic Bloom faced its own set of weather-induced difficulties. High winds, hail and low temperatures afflicted Hummingbird Ranch this past weekend. Festival-goers braved broken canopies, scattered debris and even shattered windshields (due to wind-blown fragments). Despite the relentless downpour of Mother Nature’s wrath, Sonic Bloom attendees and artists carried on with a renewed sense of vigor and communal spirit to make the best of the situation. Sonic Bloom headliner OPIUO arrived just as the hail finished, putting him right in the middle of the weather-fueled action. We sat down with OPIUO after the festival to discuss his experience braving the elements, what makes Sonic Bloom unique and his love for Colorado. 303 Magazine: Did the rain, hail and wind play any role in your Saturday night set? OPIUO: About two hours before playing we had to make a call whether we were going to our normal, full live show or stripped back DJ thing at the back of the stage instead. I was super bummed out because the crew had flown out and we were ready to do it, but the weather was being difficult. We decided to just trust that it’s going to go away and a half hour before we just went for it. Which is awesome, because I’d hate to not [bring the full experience.] 303: This wasn’t your first year playing Sonic Bloom, how was this year different than in the past? O: I was only there for a short amount of time, but it was different because of that weather. When we arrived it was almost apocalyptic. Everyone was sort of wanting to be stoked and trying to do their best, but the wind was so strong and it was raining and just hailed, so it was kind of like, “what’s going on?” It was almost like the sun went down, the wind died and then it just came alive. It was cool to see the transition. 303: I think the people in the crowd feed off the energy of the artist. It was nice to see you on stage seemingly unaffected by the weather. O: I think it actually kicked me further into gear. You want to forget about that and really push it. 303: You seem to bring that energy to every performance. Sonic Bloom is a festival you’ve attended multiple times, why is that? O: I like the music, the place, the people that go — they like what I do but they also really enjoy that kind of realm of music in general. They are passionate. 303: Sonic Bloom places importance on participation, do you think that’s important for a festival to offer? O: I prefer to get as many people as possible involved. I think you get more out of festivals that way. I think more people should step out of their box and try new things because it’s a cool place to do it. Even if it’s not their normal life, you can get rid of your invented character that everyone has in a way, and you can really discover new things about yourself when you participate. 303: You have an extensive history of getting involved in your own craft. For example, your last Red Rocks performance you curated an entire orchestra to accompany you. What drives your passion for involvement? O: I don’t want to get bored. As soon as I complete one thing, I’m already five steps ahead on the next. It’s a very short existence. I think about it more and more and I just can’t believe there’s opportunity everywhere and I just want to do it all. I’m just driven that way. It’s who I am. 303: Will you create music for the rest of your life? O: I’ll be creating something. Music to me at the moment is so much of my life, I never thought I’d do it for a living, let alone traveling around the world, so to continue to do that would be ideal. But I don’t want to put too much pressure on it if it does change — because life does change. It is what it is for as long as it is, and I will love it for as long as it is. 303: It seems you’re naturally creative, so I don’t think that element will change much in your life. O: I love creating anything. I think music will play a role in my life until I die, for sure. 303: You obviously have a lot of love for Colorado, where does that come from? O: It was actually the first place I ever played in America. It was at Cervantes in 2010. I didn’t know anyone here and I came and it was a big surprise, like “wow, people really like this here.” They knew my music. When you come from the other side of the world you don’t really know what’s going to happen. They seemed to always invite me back and every time I came back it was just different from the rest of the world, there’s a super passionate bunch of people here. Everyone wants to create too, there’s a bunch of that but there are also a lot of people who are just happy being supporters of that. It’s essential, you know. I don’t know what it is, if it’s in the water or what but Colorado is just amazing. It’s got a reputation, people know. Even people I’ve associated with in Australia or New Zealand, they see the Red Rocks shows and people really want to come to Colorado. 303: Do you plan to keep coming to Colorado in the future? O: Totally. Yes. Stay up to date with OPIUO’s next Colorado tour dates by following him on Facebook. It is a celebration of the world’s ‘slow food’ cultures of small-scale farming and harvesting. The festival will be going on its third year, taking place on the weekend of Friday, July 19th through Sunday, July 21st. The event is modeled after Slow Food International’s Terra Madre held in Italy every other year, starting in 1996. Terra Madre celebrates small-scale food and wine producers and is an exchange for producers and consumers from all over. Also starting in Italy, in 1989, is the Slow Food movement organized by Carlo Petrini and a group of activists to defend regional food traditions. It started with the protest of a proposed McDonald’s in Rome, where the group demonstrated on the Spanish Steps. Over the years, the movement has reached over 160 countries and 37 states. Slow Food’s mission is to protect food biodiversity, to build links between producers and consumers and to raise awareness about the most pressing issues facing our food system. Its initiatives include educating people especially youth about clean food choices, gardening and farming practices, saving endangered foods, addressing animal welfare and celebrating gastronomic traditions around the world. The Slow Food movement is much like a governmental body going from International to National to local chapters. Slow Food International in Italy develops the projects worldwide and is lead by an International Council. On the national level, countries all have decisional freedom but follow the political guidelines of Slow Food International. Slow Food USA is a branch that focuses on the states with over 130 chapters in different cities. Colorado has four chapters with the biggest one here in Denver. Slow Food Denver is a very active chapter in the U.S. -- so it’s no coincidence that Slow Food Nations was chosen to be hosted here. Denver’s ChapterClick to view slideshow.“Each chapter is different because it develops programming based on the interests of the local community,” said Krista Roberts, Director of Slow Food Denver & Event Director. “So our focus is unique to Denver and its growing food community.” The Denver Chapter has several programs, some based on the national curriculum, some unique to the community. One of the biggest initiatives nationally is the School Gardens Program which they focus a lot on. And for the adults, the Community Table Program is a mix of socials and hands-on workshops. The School Gardens ProgramThe School Gardens program is a national initiative that aims to teach children how to grow, cook and be more knowledgeable about food in general. In 2017, the Slow Food Denver School Garden programs supported 7,500 students, 300 school garden classes, 70 youth farm Stands, 48 cooking classes and 40 schools. “We work with Denver schools teaching students where their food comes from and the importance of food choices,” said Roberts. “This program works to strengthen the food communities of tomorrow by engaging youth today.” The Garden to Cafeteria initiative encourages schools to have gardens, harvest the produce grown and use it to supply food in the cafeteria. The program is offered in Denver, Jefferson and Littleton counties. In addition, the after-school enrichment program, Cooking from the Garden, has Slow Food instructors come in and teach kids about planting, maintaining, harvesting and using that food to cook. For each season, the classes offer something different. For example, in the fall, it’s harvesting, basic cooking techniques and putting the garden to bed. Other programs include in-school cooking classes without the gardening component to teach kids how to use kitchen equipment and work with different ingredients and flavors. Lastly, the Denver Youth Farm Stand Coalition is a joint project between Slow Food Denver and Denver Urban Gardens where children can participate in an after-school farm stand near school property. The coalition helps kids to learn about healthy eating, consumerism and mathematics. Community Table Programs“Our Community Table program offers many ways for like-minded people to connect through food,” said Roberts. “When a group of people gathers around the table to share ideas and the pleasures of food, new friendships form, creativity blossoms, and the world becomes a healthier, happier place.” Slow Food Socials happen about once a month and help to benefit the organization as well as bring people together. Recent events have included chef tastings, a wine dive and a brunch — with all proceeds benefiting Slow Food Denver’s initiatives. Other events include author talks, a Celebrate Local campaign during the month of September celebrating local food purveyors and restaurants through dinner socials and a DIY Book Club. There are also more hands-on activities if that’s more your thing. Workshops like Preserve the Harvest is a series of events in collaboration with several Denver organizations to teach preserving and curing techniques. As you can see, Slow Food is more than just an awesome festival -- it’s a year-round organization. How to Get Involved“The best way to get involved is to sign up for our mailing list,” said Roberts. Get alerts about all of the upcoming events Slow Food puts on each month like the socials and workshops. You can also follow them on Facebook for all updates and events. If you’re interested in the School Gardens program -- teachers, faculty or parents can become Garden Leaders meaning they become the point of contact at a community school to bring the resources of Slow Food Denver to the children. When you become a garden leader, your school receives free seeds for a school garden and monthly educational workshops. For the Cooking from the Garden after school program, you can email [email protected] to implement it at your school. Several volunteer opportunities are available including the upcoming Slow Food Nations festival. At the festival, a part of the sustainability team by making sure trash goes in the proper receptacles: compost, recycling and trash -- help to serve food and more. For more details and sign up details, see here. Additional volunteer opportunities include being an intern, cooking from the garden class assistant and tabling at farmers markets. You can also become a member of the Slow Food Denver chapter, or wherever you live that has a chapter nearby to help keep the movement growing. For more information on getting involved, email [email protected]. Be sure to check out the Slow Food Nations Festival in Larimer Square next month -- and learn more of what Slow Food is all about. via https://303magazine.com/2019/06/slow-food-is-not-just-a-festival-but-a-global-movement-with-a-big-chapter-here-in-denver/ Five years ago, alternative-rock band, Anberlin announced that they were calling it quits. After years of intense touring, the Florida-born group had lost their taste for the road and felt that they had lost their connection with the things that were important to them — including their fans. They embarked on one farewell tour and left us all believing that our memories were all we had left. Then, earlier this year, they revealed that they would be giving Anberlin one more shot and they were preparing to embark on a reunion tour. Much to the delight of the local scene, that tour made a stop in Denver Monday night — and Denver turned the evening into a reunion of their own. The band’s five-year hiatus came to an end largely because the members of Anberlin missed each other as much as they missed making music together — and based on the reaction of fans, it’s fair to say that they missed them just as much as they missed each other. Looking around at the line — which wrapped around the block — waiting for doors to open, it was easy to spot plenty of old t-shirts from past tours, brought out of retirement to celebrate the reunion. It was clear that no one was going to miss a chance to rock out with Anberlin one more time. However, it wasn’t just the band that fans were excited to see — they were also excited to see old friends, and make some new ones. As attendees filed in, filling the venue nearly to capacity, there were many conversations amongst audience members about the last time they saw the band live and how long they’ve been a fan. Of all the things we missed about Anberlin, the community of fans has to be one of the things at the top of the list — and reconnecting with them Monday night reminded us all why. The air was electric as the chatter of the audience escalated to screams of excitement as Anberlin walked on stage. Vocalist Stephen Christian was dripping in punk, dressed in all black and sporting a leather jacket he was clearly ready to rock. The band immediately launched into playing, their uptempo rock whipping the audience into a frenzy. By the time the third song ended, the roar of the audience was so loud that the band had to take a break from their set to wait for the applause to die down. Midway through the show, Christian slowed things down to address the crowd. He took time to explain the band’s hiatus, telling the audience that he had lost sight of why he enjoyed being in the band in the first place. He continued on to explain that during the last five years, he’d received hundreds of messages from listeners who were impacted by Anberlin’s music — all of which reminded him that music is part of all of our lives and an important part of each of our individual stories. He continued on to thank the audience for supporting them before easing back into the set with a few ballads. As the night came to a close, the energy of the evening intensified. The band played their closing songs with seemingly endless energy that was matched by the audience who moshed and crowd surfed as though they may never get a chance to do so again. For fans of Anberlin, the good times were back and we all hope they’re here to stay. There was barely-there pearl that seemed to help blend out the eyeshadow but didn’t change it from a matte finish when applied to the eye. The texture was soft, a smidgen drier with light dustiness in the pan, but it applied well, blended out without difficulty, and wasn’t prone to fallout. It had buildable pigmentation that ranged from semi-opaque to opaque (two layers). It stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours on me before I noticed fading. Top Dupes
Formula Overview- The eyeshadow formula is supposed to be "pigment[ed]" with "smooth and even application" that is "long-lasting." The matte shades are typically semi-opaque to opaque but buildable with soft, velvety textures that can sometimes be a little powdery or slightly firm, depending on the shade. I find that the mattes are often best suited to someone who likes control over pigmentation and may prefer to build up color; they regularly perform better in practice than just swatched on the arm as well. The shimmer shades range from satin to metallic, and the more metallic shades tend to feel creamier to the touch, while the satin ones have a fine pearl to them that looks almost melted on the lid once blended out. Both the mattes and shimmers are blendable and easy to work with. Most of Viseart's eyeshadows wear between seven and nine hours on me. Browse all of our Viseart Eyeshadow swatches. Bougainvillea (Grande Pro (Vol. 1) #20)Viseart Bougainvillea (Grande Pro (Vol. 1) #20) Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a medium-dark purple with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had buildable pigmentation from semi-opaque to opaque (two layers) with a slightly drier, firmer consistency, but it was actually softer and more blendable than the version I encountered in the GPV1 palette. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably. Top Dupes

Calypso (GPV2 #15)Viseart Calypso (Grande Pro (Vol. 2) #15) Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a bright, pinky plum with subtle, warm undertones and a sparkling sheen. It had rich pigmentation with a smooth, blendable consistency that wasn’t too firmly nor too loosely pressed in the pan. It was one of the best Viseart eyeshadows released in the GPV2 palette, and it remained true in the single pan version! It wore nicely for eight and a half hours on me before fading a bit. Top Dupes

ChocolateViseart Chocolate Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a medium-dark, chocolaty brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. There have been a few releases of this, and I think they perform more similarly in practice but swatch differently. The single version felt slightly dusty and sheered out a bit initially, but it built up well and blended out without difficulty (whereas some of the palette versions have adhered better to my arm in addition to performing well on my eye). It lasted well for eight and a half hours before I noticed fading. Top Dupes

Mocha (Warm Mattes #11)Viseart Mocha (Warm Mattes #11) Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a light-medium brown with muted, subtly warm undertones and a matte finish. It had buildable pigmentation from a little over medium to mostly opaque on my skin, and it didn’t adhere as well to bare skin as the shade in my Warm Mattes palette. The eyeshadow was easy to work with, though, as the product built up well without fallout, blended out nicely, and stayed on well for eight and a half hours before fading visibly. Top Dupes
